How to keep your Photos / Photos organized on iPhone / iPad?

After about two years, 14,000 photos and videos settled in Photos / Fotky. Most screenshots, things that came through WhatsApp or are saved there by Instagram when inserting Stories. Originally, I somehow thought I would just “sort” it, at least in part – but in this number it’s practically impossible. What’s more, Apple doesn’t make it easy, it’s not a file system, it doesn’t have real folders, and it’s extremely difficult to work with.

In the end, I just “exported” it from the Library somewhere to disk (and maybe I’ll do something about it in time) and deleted the entire Library. Which was also extremely instructive, because Apple has so many bugs and issues in it that it’s hard to believe (all in How to delete all photos and videos from the Library on Mac OS, iPhone, or iPad. What problems will you encounter? ). But come on, I have an empty Library, so it’s time to make sure it doesn’t become unusable again.

TIP: Photos, Videos, Folders, and Albums in Photos on iPhone or iPad. How to do it?

Disable saving created Stories and Reels . Most of them really have no value, so there is no point in storing them. Only if you take photos or shoot directly in the Story and you just have to get used to the need to save it manually after creating the Story. You do this in the Instagram app in your Stories – drag up to see the Stories overview or open the add and there is a gear at the top left – there you can turn off Saving to the Camera Roll . Make sure you do this for each account you have connected on your phone and tablet.

Turn off saving original photos and videos in Instagram . This is done in Settings -> Account -> Original Photos . The second option is again, to learn to work better with it. This is a photo / video taken by “Instagram” in the form before it is made.

TIP: If you do not turn off saving to Archive in Instagram, you will have everything in Archive from where you can save. You can also save by looking at active Stories.

Do the same wherever something is automatically saved – or learn to handle it so that you can delete it after it ‘s taken and used, or mark it with a suitable keyword that will allow you to selectively delete it later.

Fortunately, you don’t have to mark the screenshots , a filter (folder) is directly available for them, so if you don’t delete them right after use, you can lubricate them once in a while through this view. On Mac OS, you don’t have to have screenshots in Photos.

Useful for screenshots that you share right on social networks is to learn not to save them , but to share them directly from the screenshot dialog. Here it is true that the vast majority of screenshots are just a momentary thing, there is no point in hiding them. So share (via the share dialog) and then don’t save. Just pay attention to the classic behavior of the iPhone / iPad when you must not switch between applications if you have an “open” newly created screenshot – it is not possible to return to it.

WhatsApp has an automatic download that can be turned off in Settings -> Storage and Data where you can select Never for Photos, Audio, Video and Documents. But what you already download manually, you must also solve manually.

TIP: How to delete all photos and videos from the Library on Mac OS, iPhone or iPad. What problems do you encounter?

If you have Windows instead of a Mac, iCloud for Windows won’t help. You can’t delete photos in it, they won’t be deleted from iPhone (Library). And you can’t organize in it at all, it’s just a copy of the Library and it’s not eternally working.

Discipline is needed

The most important thing for this tip is that you have to learn to erase and erase and erase. It is necessary to do this as soon as possible , ideally at the time of taking and using a photo or screenshot.

You can help by creating an “To delete” album or tagging (keyword) photos and videos that aren’t supposed to stay permanent – then just delete once in a while if you don’t do it right away.

Unfortunately, keywords can only be added on Mac OS – on iPhone / iPad you can only add a caption (and from iOS 14, be careful) – but where you can write the keywords you are looking for. Feel free to use hashtags – like #garbage

What is transferred between Photos between Mac OS and iPhone / iPad is described, by the way, in How to organize photos and videos on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Library, folders, albums

Everything will spoil your design. Missing keyword, complicated work with folders and albums, incompatibilities between iPhone and Mac OS, synchronization problems, broken iCloud for Windows and separation of photos from the file system. But that’s just the way it is.
