Discord has become so popular with gamers that it needs no introduction. With millions of users around the world, Discord is one of the best platforms for audio, video, graphic and text communication between users.
This article will help you set up your PlayStation 4 so you can chat with your friends on Discord while playing your favorite games on that console.
Using Discord on PlayStation 4
Unfortunately, the Discord app does not currently support the PlayStation 4. But it looks like things could change sooner or later.
Discordians around the world have sent requests and opened dozens of topics on the official Discord support page, asking developers to make a PS4 version of the app.
Since Discord pays close attention to community inquiries and complaints, we could get the official Discord app for PlayStation 4 and many other consoles.
Does this mean that you have to wait for the release of the app in order to use Discord on PS4? Absolutely not.
There is also a way to use Discord on your PlayStation 4, provided you have all the hardware you need. It may take longer, but it’s worth it.
So, if you want to follow the guide below, you need to purchase a headset with an optical cable and USB connectivity support.
You will also need a MixAmp or similar device to switch audio between your PC and PS4. For example, you can use the A40 TR headset with the MixAmp PRO TR as they turned out to be a good combination for this type of setup.
Apart from the two items and the cables that come with them (3.5mm Male to Male, 3.5mm Aux Splitter, 3.5mm to 3.5mm with volume), you need to install Discord on your computer.
Once you’ve purchased all the items you need, it’s time to set everything up. Let’s start by connecting the PS4 console to MixAmp. Here’s everything you need to do.
First, turn on your PlayStation 4. Connect one side of the optical cable to the PlayStation 4 and the other to the back of the MixAmp.
You need to make sure your MixAmp is set to console mode. If you connected everything successfully, your headset will be assigned as a USB device. You will see a message on the screen notifying you of this.
After that go to PlayStation 4 settings and follow these steps:
Scroll down and select the Sound & Screen option.
Select Audio Output Settings.
Select the digital output port and change it to optical.
It is recommended to select Dolby 5.1 channel.
Select an audio format and select Bitstream (Dolby).
Return to the initial Settings screen and select Devices . Open ” Audio Devices “. Make sure Headphone Out is set to Chat Audio .
It’s time to connect everything to your computer. Turn on your computer. Connect one end of the USB cable to the MixAmp and the other to your computer. Make sure your MixAmp is in PC mode.
Open the Discord app on your computer. Go to Settings.
Select the Voice & Video option.
In the Input Device section, select the headset you are using.
Leave the default output device.
Click Finish to finish. You can now talk freely through Discord and use audio on PlayStation 4 at the same time.
What to do if it still doesn’t work
You will not be able to hear any other sound playing on your computer. This is because your PlayStation 4 accepts the main audio source on your MixAmp. Fortunately, this problem is easy to fix.
All you need to do is connect a 3.5-3.5mm cable to the speaker port on the PC and to the AUX port on the MixAmp. Change the output device from step 7 to Speakers and voila, the issue is resolved.
Chat on Discord while enjoying your favorite PlayStation 4 games
By following these steps, you can play your favorite PlayStation 4 games while using Discord. It might take a little longer to set up, but it’s worth it.
This method will be sufficient until the official version of the app for PlayStation 4 arrives.
Can I use the web browser on my PS4 to log into Discord?
Logging into Discord from the default PlayStation browser shouldn’t be a problem, but as soon as you open a game or another app, you’ll lose audio, so it’s not exactly an ideal solution.
Is there a Discord app for PS4?
No, as of this writing, there is no native Discord app on the PlayStation app store.
Can I link my PS4 account to Discord?
Not officially, and not the way you can do with PC and Xbox. There are third-party apps that support this claim that it might be worth checking out.
