Experts from the Geometrium School of Design and Architectural Engineering tell us how to furnish a modern children’s room taking into account the characteristics of the child’s gender and age, as well as from the point of view of ergonomics and safety.
Children dream of a separate beautiful room, and parents strive to make it comfortable and safe. They often ask themselves the same questions: how to create a stylish, functional and cozy space at the same time, please the child, organize a comfortable room for children of different sexes.
FOR BOY
Style. Scandi or minimalism are suitable for preschoolers. Neutral colors, simple shapes, comfortable ergonomic furniture can be easily complemented with bright decorative elements and changed as the child grows. A room for children over 10 years old can be decorated in styles with a distinct character: pop art or loft.
Colors. Use a muted, but not gloomy palette. Pastel colors, diluted with bright accents of blue, green, terracotta shades, are suitable for a boy’s room.
Lighting. Supplement the main lighting in the form of a spotlight or ceiling lamp with a night light at the head of the bed and a hanging lamp in the play area. LED strips and neon signs will harmoniously fit into the student’s room and give it individuality. And don’t forget about the table lamp in the work area.
Filling. Instead of tulle, use blinds or roller blinds. Play up the boy’s hobbies with decor: use figurines or posters of heroes from his favorite movies and computer games, attach a basketball hoop to the wall or hang a guitar. If he collects model cars, install an open rack or shelf.
FOR GIRL
Style. Classic, Scandi and Provence are appropriate for a preschool girl. Modern teenage girls increasingly choose laconic minimalist interiors, and some prefer loft. To balance the brutality or, conversely, excessive severity of the interior, add elegant decorative elements – vases, soft poufs and carpets.
Colors. In the interior of a children’s room for girls, in addition to the traditional pink palette, you can use warm shades: light yellow, sand, beige.
Lighting. Place a chandelier in the center of the ceiling, and neat floor lamps, pendant lamps or sconces in functional areas.
Filling. Decorate the room with natural textiles, live plants, photographs and thematic posters. Hang a large mirror on the wall, install a dressing table, a spacious closet.
FOR TWO
Style. It is important to consider the wishes of both children and come to a compromise, especially if a room for children of different sexes is planned. The optimal solution is minimalism.
Colors. Remember that not all girls like pink and boys like blue. Consider the age, character and wishes of each child. For example, pastel colors will calm, and bright colors will energize. Choose neutral basic shades, complementing them with contrasting accents in textiles or decor.
Lighting. In addition to the main lighting, place track lights in the play and work area of each child – this way they will be comfortable studying or creating, if necessary, changing the direction of the light flow and not disturbing each other. Also, do not forget about night lights by the beds.
Filling. If the room area allows, divide the space into two zones and place a bed, a storage cabinet, a table and a chair in each of them. If the area is not enough, put a bunk bed or transformable furniture. Try to leave as much space as possible for free movement around the room.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
— The more natural light, the better: do not block the windows with furniture or thick curtains.
— If possible, install a small sports corner or wall bars.
— Choose natural materials: wood, metal, brick, cotton. They are durable, environmentally friendly, and easy to care for.
— Avoid monochrome. Choose 2-3 colors for the design that go well together.
— Don’t overload the room with furniture. Use multifunctional models: a loft bed, a transforming table, a bed-chest of drawers.
— Avoid an abundance of bright and flashy colors: red, orange. They excite the psyche and quickly become boring.
— Think of a convenient storage system. Keep in mind that a child’s tastes and interests change quickly: preschoolers have toys that take up a lot of space, while schoolchildren have books, notebooks, and creative items.
— Set up a functional work area for the student: place a desk or computer table and an anatomical chair that corresponds to the child’s height, shelves or racks.
— Avoid low-hanging lamps, heavy floor lamps, and furniture with sharp corners—these are sources of danger for small children.
