How to fix stuttering and freezing in Days Gone PC

Days Gone PC Stuttering and Freezing Fix: After its PS4 release in May 2021, Days Gone is now finally available for Windows. It’s good to see so many exclusive PlayStation releases on PC. First Detroit Become Human, then Horizon Zero Dawn, and now Days Gone.

If you didn’t know, Days Gone is a third-person action-adventure survival horror game set in a post-apocalyptic open world. The player controls Deacon, a former army veteran, whose goal is to survive against mindless zombie-like creatures known as Freakers, with the help of a wide range of weapons.

Deacon’s main transport vehicle is a motorcycle that can be modified with parts to improve its speed, durability or maneuverability, among other parameters. The player can craft weapons that can be repaired after prolonged use. The player can collect already created weapons from the enemies. The player can create new items to improve combat efficiency.

How to fix stuttering and freezing in Days Gone PC

The truth is, performance issues and bugs are very common on large console ports. So, like the great console ports before it, Days Gone for PC also has some performance-related issues. Players have already started reporting various performance-related issues across the forums about how in-game micro stutters are getting out of hand. That is why we decided to create this guide.

Days Gone PC Requirements

  MINIMUM RECOMMENDED
Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
SW Windows 10 64-bit Windows 10 64-bit
PROCESSOR Intel Core (email protected) or AMD FX (email protected) Intel Core (email protected) or Ryzen 5 (email protected)
MEMORY 8 GB RAM 16 GB RAM
GRAPHICS Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 (3GB) or AMD Radeon R9 290 (4GB) Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) or AMD Radeon RX 580 (8GB)
DIRECTX Version 11 Version 11
STORAGE 70 GB available space 70 GB available space
ADDITIONAL NOTES Although not required, SSD is recommended for storage and 16GB of memory Although not required, SSD is recommended for storage

You must first make sure that your system can handle Days Gone. The recommended official requirements establish that to play Days Gone at 1080p 60 FPS on your PC you need to have a graphics card whose performance is similar to a 1060 GB or an RX 580. And a processor similar to a Ryzen 5 1500x. But if you ask me, even a GTX 1060 6GB is not enough. This game had problems on a system that had GTX 1660 and Ryzen 5 3600. So turn up the graphics settings to the maximum only if you have at least an RTX 2060 or a Vega 56.

The best graphics settings for Days Gone

We’re still fiddling with the Days Gone graphics settings. We will update this article as soon as we find the best combination that will make the game run without stuttering or freezing our mediocre gaming rig. Here are the specifications of our test bench:

  • CPU: Intel i3 9100F
  • GPU: Zotac GTX 1650
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4 at 3200mhz
  • OS: Windows 10 64-bit (version 20H2)
  • HDD: 1 TB 7200 rpm
  • Monitor resolution: 1920 × 1080
  • Driver: GeForce Game Ready Driver v466.27

Install the latest version of Windows 10

Days Gone only runs on Windows 10, also 64-bit. So Windows 7 and 8.1 users are out of luck here. Now, Microsoft is known for pushing a ton of updates for Windows. Some end up being good, while others end up causing a lot of performance issues. Fortunately, the latest version of Windows 10 is probably the most stable version of Windows we’ve had in a while. So update your operating system to the latest version. Here is the latest version:

Here’s how to update:

  • Go to your Windows settings
  • Click Update & Security
  • Click Check for updates
  • Wait until all updates are installed
  • Restart your PC

Changes You Can Make in the Nvidia Control Panel

You can modify the Nvidia Control Panel to get additional performance from your system. Right-click on your desktop and open the Nvidia Control Panel. Select “Adjust image settings with preview”, select “Use my preference emphasizing:” and pull the slider towards “Performance”.

If you are using a gaming laptop with an Nvidia GPU, just check if your laptop is using the Nvidia GPU or something else.

  • Click Manage 3D Settings located on the left side
  • Select the Program Settings tab
  • Under “Select a program to customize”, select Days Gone
  • If it’s not there, click Add and then select it
  • Now set “Select the preferred graphics processor for this program” to “NVIDIA High Performance Processor”

Changes you can make in the AMD Control Panel

AMD users can also do something similar in their control panels.

  • Disable Radeon Anti-Lag, Boost, Anisotropic Filtering, and Frame Rate Target Control
  • Disable image sharpening, morphological filtering, V-sync, maximum tessellation, OpenGL triple buffering, and Radeon Chill
  • Set the tessellation mode and shader cache to “AMD optimized” and the anti-aliasing mode and anti-aliasing method to “Use application settings” and “Multisampling” respectively.
  • Set the texture filtering quality to “Performance” and the GPU workload to “Graphics”
  • Finally, enable the Surface Format Optimization.

Disable captures

Like Nvidia’s in-game overlay instant playback feature, the Capture Tool in Windows 10 often tends to be resource intensive and the Background Recording feature always records in the background while playing any game. So turning it off will give you an immediate boost. This is how you do it:

  • Open Windows settings
  • Click Games
  • Select captures
  • Disable background recording

These are all the solutions we have for people experiencing stuttering and freezing on Days Gone PC.
