How To Fix Stuttering And FPS Drops In The Ascent Game

Ascent stutters fps drops – Are you experiencing stutters and fps drops on The Ascent? Don’t worry, you are not alone. Here is a guide that might help you.

The Ascent: How To Fix Stuttering And FPS Drops

Developed by Neon Giant, The Ascent is a two stick shooter and is presented from a top down view overlooking the surroundings. The promotion includes the ability to aim both high and low at enemy targets. This allows players to differentiate between shooting enemies closer or farther. It also acts as the cover system, as the player can target enemies above props in the environment. Character appearance is fully customizable, and you can even give your character new abilities and skills by augmenting them with cyber software updates.

In fact, I was waiting for this game since I saw the trailer in 2020. The game looked extremely impressive back then. And now that it’s finally here, I’m going to enjoy it with my friends as much as I can. If you didn’t know, Neon Giant is an independent studio and The Ascent is probably their first big project. But I have to say that they have done a tremendous job. So far, The Ascent has garnered rave reviews and gamers are enjoying the title as well.

The problem is, the game has stuttering issues. You will find many posts on The Ascent’s Steam Discussions page where the issue of random stutters and fps drops has been mentioned many times. Check out this post from a Steam user:

Constant random stutters?

Does anyone suffer from this? I tried restarting the PC after testing the game and it somehow seemed to be solved, but every time something explodes the game freezes for a second or two.

The good thing is that the developers have been very active on the forums. One developer actually immediately took the time to explain the situation. Here’s why the game stutters or freezes:

We are working on a fix for this as we speak. Stutters should only happen the first time something happens, so rebooting won’t help, you’re caching the shaders. (which is then saved forever)

According to the developers, most stutters and freezes will occur when a scene loads through time. It won’t happen once the graphics are cached.

How to fix stuttering

If you are using a decent CPU and GPU and you get decent FPS in the game. So I suggest you limit the frame rate of the game. The game does not have the option to limit fps so I did it using the Nvidia Control Panel. Here is what you need to do:

  • Launch the Nvidia Control Panel
  • Click Manage 3D Settings
  • Click on the Program Settings tab
  • To select The Ascent, click Add
  • Select The Ascent from the list of programs
  • Find the MaxFrame Rate setting
  • Set it to 60 or something your PC can handle consistently (I set it to 100 because that’s the minimum FPS I get on my system)
  • Enter the game and activate V-sync

Other than that, you can set the DirectX settings from the Graphics menu, in DX11. If you are playing on DX12, obviously.

Try lowering the graphics settings. I see that a lot of people play Ultra. People often speculate that games that have a top-down view are not demanding. Sadly, that’s not the case with The Ascent. You need a Ryzen 5 3700x paired with an RTX 2080 and 16GB of RAM to play at 1080p 60fps on the “High” setting. And the “Minimum” specs would only allow you to play at 1080p 30fps on the lowest settings. This should clear things up in my opinion.

Lastly, close demanding apps that may be running in the background and disable all kinds of overlays. The developers have already said that a patch is on the way. So I’m sure these performance issues will be fixed soon.
