1. Use PowerShell

The most common solution for the OneNote problem in Windows 10, well, not just OneNote, but some other software as well, is to reset the app package. For this, follow these instructions:

  1. Right-click the Start menu button and open the command prompt (administrator) .
  2. Enter the following line and press Enter:
    • Shell Power
  3. After that, enter this command and press Enter :
    • get-appxpackage * microsoft.office.onenote * | remove-appxpackage
  4. After that, enter one more command and hit Enter :
    • remove-appxprovisionedpackage –Online –PackageName Microsoft.Office.OneNote_2014.919.2035.737_neutral_ ~ _8wekyb3d8bbwe
  5. Restart your computer

Try opening your OneNote now, and everything should work again.

2. Reinstall Microsoft Office

If the PowerShell solution did not resolve the problem, you can try reinstalling the full Microsoft Office package.

If you used Office before upgrading your system to Windows 10, there is a possibility that something went wrong while the system was upgrading, and some features of your Office suite were corrupted.

So, find the Programs and Features, uninstall Office completely, and then download or install it from the installation disc again. Microsoft recently updated their OneNote app, so if you’re using this version, you should have no problem running it.

But even if they can run the app normally, users are not that satisfied with the update, read more about the recent OneNote update here.

3. Delete the settings.dat file

  1. Press Windows Key + R and enter % localappdata% .
  2. Now press Enter or right click on OK .
  3. Now navigate to the PackagesMicrosoft.Office.OneNote_8wekyb3d8bbweSettings directory and delete the settings.dat file .

If you are having problems with OneNote in Windows 10, the problem could be related to the settings.dat file. This is a configuration file for OneNote, and if this file gets corrupted, you won’t be able to start OneNote properly.

To fix the problem, it is recommended that you delete the settings.dat file and restart OneNote. After doing so, try launching OneNote again and see if the problem persists.

4. Switch to a different page

Several users reported syncing issues with OneNote. According to them, changes to documents are not synced between devices.

This can be a big problem as you won’t be able to access your documents from a different device. However, users have found a useful solution that could help you with this problem.

According to users, once you’re done editing your document, switch to a different page in OneNote. Doing so will force OneNote to sync your changes.

By default, OneNote should sync any changes as soon as you make them, but if that doesn’t happen, be sure to try this workaround. This is not a permanent solution, however you should at least be able to sync your documents using this workaround.

5. Click the + button

Several users reported that OneNote cannot sync. According to users, they are stuck waiting for their laptops to charge. This can be a big problem since you won’t be able to access your notes at all.
