How to fix a broken sensor in a PS3

Like CD or DVD players, the disc drive in the PlayStation 3 console uses an internal sensor to read discs that are inserted into its Blu-Ray drive. This sensor uses a laser to read the disc, and if this laser gets dirty it will probably not work properly. If your PS3 is not reading discs correctly, you can open the unit and take a look at the sensor.Things you need

1

Turn off the PS3 console and unplug the cables from the back of the unit, as well as all devices from the USB ports on the front of the unit.
2

Use the tip of the screwdriver to pop the rubber pad off the screw on the left side of the console, near the top.
3

Remove the screw and set it aside.
4

Slide the top case of the drive to the left and lift it up to remove it. This will expose a metal lid.
5

Remove all seven screws from the metal box lid and remove the lid to expose the interior of the console, including the hard drive.
6

Remove all screws at the corners of the disc assembly and lift the machine up. Disconnect the SATA ribbon cable where it connects to the back of the drive. Place the drive assembly in front of you.
7

Remove all screws on top of the drive. Lift the top of the unit until you expose the internal parts of the unit, including the circular light assembly.
8

Use the microfiber cloth to clean the lens sensor. this will clear that of dust and debris. If the drive still does not read the disks upon reassembly, remove the screws that hold the optical assembly in place and remove the assembly. Replace it with a new light assembly (available from a PlayStation parts dealer).
