You started playing PlayStation 4 with your friends, and you realized you need software that allows you to communicate effectively. Although the PS4 offers the party function, which allows the user to talk to other gamers, in some situations it does not seem to be the best solution, also because lately the games in circulation are more and more often multi-platform. This means that, as the players come from different platforms, it is not possible to use the voice chat included in the system of the Sony home console.
For this reason, you have done some research online and you have found a possible solution in Discord , a VoIP application that allows gamers to stay in touch during gaming sessions (and not only) compatible with most operating systems and devices, such as Windows, Android and iOS. However, checking the PS4 store did not seem to see the service in question and, therefore, you are wondering if it is possible to download Discord on PS4 .
Well, your doubts are well founded: a Discord application for PS4 is not available. But don’t worry, it is possible to use Discord via its web version, which also works from the PS4 browser (with some limitations, which I will talk more about later). If, therefore, you want to deepen the subject, make yourself comfortable and read carefully everything I am about to tell you. Preliminary information
Before showing you how to download Discord on PS4 , or rather, how to use this service from the Sony console, I want you to know that there are some small checks to do. Firstly, to enjoy Discord on your PS4, your PS4 must be connected to the internet , as it is an online service.
To check the connection of the PS4, go to the console settings by pressing the briefcase icon located at the top right of the main menu, then go to Network > Check Internet connection .
If your PS4 is connected to the internet a screen will open containing all the information about your connection. Otherwise, still in the Network menu , presses Configure Internet connection , then select the type of connection you want to use ( Wi-Fi or via LAN cable , this last connection is preferable in terms of stability), choose the type of configuration you intend to perform ( typical advice , if you do not know where to put your hands) and, in the case of a Wi-Fi network, select the connection to use and enter the access key .

How to use Discord on PS4
After learning some important concepts regarding Discord and checking the connection of your PS4 , you can finally find out how to use Discord . The operations that I will show you are very simple to carry out and will not take you a lot of time.
Set up your browser correctly
Before accessing Discord and performing all the necessary operations in order to enable the service, you must take care to check the PS4 browser settings . In particular, access the PS4 Internet Browser by pressing on the relevant application located in the main menu.
If you do not find the application, go to the Collection , go to Applications and locate Internet Browser . After starting the application, press the Options button on the controller, to open the Options menu , press on Settings and make sure that Enable JavaScript is checked (otherwise do it).
Create an account on Discord
At this point, all you have to do is log in to Discord and continue with the account setup. Using the Internet Browser application , type discord.com into the search bar at the top and press the R2 key to enter .
Now, within the main Discord screen, you can log in or, in case you don’t have an account, create a new one. To log in, move the cursor over the Login button and press Enter ; then, enter the e-mail and password and press Login .
If, on the other hand, you need to create an account, click on the Register button , located at the bottom, under the Login button . Next, enter the required data, i.e. your e-mail , your username , password and date of birth . After accepting the terms of use, press Continue to confirm the creation of the account.
After logging into Discord you will have access to all the features offered by the service. Within the main screen you will find various sections, each with a different utility. In the sidebar, on the left, you can find the list of all friends and messages exchanged .
To add a friend on Discord, click on the Add Friend button in the center of the screen and type in the name of the user to send an invitation to. Inside the right sidebar, however, there are all the activities performed by your friends (for example what game they are playing at a specific moment). To change any settings regarding the profile, or the app in general, press the gear icon at the bottom right, next to your username.
Also, I inform you that on Discord you can create a server , which will allow you to talk to your friends during a gaming session, schedule an activity and initiate individual or group calls. Use text chat on Discord
As I explained to you at the beginning of the guide, using Discord on the PS4 you can only exchange text messages with your friends, or start a group chat.
To start a conversation with a friend, presses on the bar that says Find or start a conversation , top left, and type the name of the user. After that, a new screen will open where you can exchange text messages, send GIFs or emojis.
I remind you that, once you have created a server , you can send text messages to anyone who is part of it, being a group chat.
Use voice chat on Discord
While it’s not officially possible to start a voice chat using Discord on PS4, there is a method that will allow you to use the software’s most requested functionality.
All you have to do is follow my advice carefully and retrieve some devices needed to solve the problem. In particular, what you need is: a pair of headphones with an optical cable and a USB port , a Mixamp for the passage of audio from PS4 to PC, a 3.5mm jack cable and a PC .
Once you have all the necessary material, connect the ends of the optical cable to the PS4 and the Mixamp . Once this is done, go to the PS4 Settings , by pressing the briefcase icon located in the main menu, go to Audio and screen> Audio output settings> Main output and select Digital Out (Optical) .
Next, connect the USB cable to the PC and to the Mixamp and make sure that the latter is in PC mode (you can check the appropriate lever on the device).
At this point, open Discord on your computer and head inside the Settings , clicking on the gear icon . Then go to the Voice and video section and select the Mixamp in the Input device option .
Well: now you just have to click on the X- shaped icon to save the changes and exit the settings. From now on, you will be able to talk freely with your friends on Discord while using the PS4. However, by doing this, you may no longer hear any kind of PC audio, as the PS4 will take priority as the main audio via the Mixamp. Thankfully, there is a very quick and easy solution to this too.
All you have to do is use the 3.5mm jack cable , inserting it into the headphone port of the PC and the Mixamp . Next, head into Discord’s Settings on your PC, go to Voice and Video and set the speakers as the output device .
