How to Disable New Browser in Telegram

At the end of July, Telegram received another update, which added a full-fledged built-in browser: now all links in the messenger can be opened through it. Switching between tabs, settings, and minimizing the browser for quick access to chats are available. But it is not always convenient to use: the browser does not support extensions and does not display some sites correctly. As a result, you have to copy the link and manually paste it into a regular browser.

But current builds of the messenger for mobile devices allow you to disable the Telegram browser and open links through the user’s chosen application. We tell you how to set this up on different smartphones and tablets.

On Android

  1. Open Telegram, click on the icon with three stripes at the top and launch “Settings”.
  2. Go to the “Chat Settings” section.
  3. Scroll down to the “Built-in browser” item and toggle the switch for this option to the inactive position.

The Android version of Telegram does not allow you to separately configure which application to open links in: the default browser will be used.

On iPhone and iPad

  1. Open Telegram and go to the Settings tab.
  2. Go to Data and Storage → Browser.
  3. Select the desired browser from the list.

After these settings, almost all links will open in your regular browser. The exception is decentralized TON sites. Links like foundation.ton will open through the built-in browser, regardless of the settings selected by the user.
