How To create a personal 5GHz Wi-Fi access point

Little by little, as we explore the new iPhone 12 , more and more interesting news appears. One of these novelties is the possibility of new phones to generate 5GHz Wi-Fi personal access points , let’s see how to do it.

Maximize compatibility or 5GHz

Until now when we created a personal access point with our iPhone we created it using the 2.4GHz network. This network gives a much greater range, but the speed is noticeably lower than the 5GHz variant. Now, with the iPhone 12, we can create higher speed networks, ideal for getting the most out of 5G connections .

Since not all devices on the market are compatible with 5GHz networks, although most are, Apple contemplates being able to force the creation of 2.4 networks. If all the devices that we are going to connect are compatible with 5GHz we can deactivate this option to enjoy the maximum speed . We do so:

  1. We open the Settingsapp on our iPhone.
  2. We enter Personal Access Point.
  3. We deactivate Maximize compatibility.

Apple warns in the text next to the setting that “If you activate your personal access point and other devices connect to it, the connection may slow down.” From this we deduce that the system will automatically adapt to the type of connection required by the device. Thus, if a device that needs 2.4GHz is connected, all connected devices will drop to 2.4GHz .

It is clear that 5G brings more benefits than meets the eye. IPhones have adapted to faster speeds in several areas, from downloading updates over mobile networks to creating faster Wi-Fi networks.
