Steps to create a moving zoom effect with Gimp

The “zoom moving” includes the structuring of an image in different layers to create a distorted effect, so that there is the illusion of movement of the figures for the viewer. If you are interested in applying this effect to your images, follow the steps:

  • Initially you must enter Gimp and select from the gallery the image in which you are going to create the moving zoom effect.
  • At the top of the program screen there is a panel of editing options.
  • Click on “file” and click on the “open” option. You can also do it the practical way by pressing the Ctrl + N key.
  • A dialog box will open with adjustment options for the image.
  • Press the alternative “pictures” to go to the list of images in the program and select again the one you want to edit.
  • Once you locate it, click with the right button and click on the open option again . This alternative is found at the bottom of the table.
  • Now we will have to duplicate the layers . To do this, click on the layer section, located at the top of the screen.
  • You will find a small box with “layers, channels and routes” options .
  • Click the two small boxes icon below the dialog box to duplicate the layer.

How to create the blur effect to create an illusion of movement?

If you want to create a blur effect with the Gimp program, in order to give an illusion of movement it is necessary to follow the following instructions step by step:

  • Click on the top layer (from the previous one you duplicated, located in the “layer” section).
  • Now we place the mouse pointer on this layer and we notice that the X and Y coordinates will be shown in the bottom bar of the screen .
  • We select from the top bar, the “filters” section and simultaneously click on filters, then on the “blur” option and finally on “motion blur”.
  • When entering the blur option we find a bar of coordinates, in which we will have to insert the data of the «central point» of our image.
  • Next, when registering these coordinates, the blur effect will be created around this specific figure.
  • After this, we click on the “blur type” option and select the “zoom” alternative .
  • Next we will have to insert a length for blur. You can try with a measurement of approximately 50 to 70.
  • After this we click on «accept» .
  • Now we need to apply more sharpness to our center point. To do this, we mark the upper layer with the right mouse button and click on “add layer mask” .
  • In the pop-up box, click on the “white” option to grant total opacity and finally click on “add” .
  • Subsequently, we select the “Blend” option from the toolbar and click on “radial gradient” .
  • With opacity at 100% and we drag continuously throughout the figure to the cross that appears in the image so that it is seen clearly.
