Find out which method will prevent you from having to install a video converter on your computer, especially if you are already a user of this magnificent multimedia player. Don’t miss it!
Convert a video with VLC in Windows 11 step by step
VLC, besides being a great media player, offers some really cool features . One of the most notable is the one that allows you to convert the format of a video, even applying some basic editing. How can you do that?
To start, I recommend that you download the latest version of VLC. This application, as I told you in the introduction, is available in the Microsoft Store . If you are a Windows user, this is the simplest way to get the program on your PC. In the case of macOS or Linux users, it is best to go to the official VLC website for installation instructions.
Once you have the latest version of VLC (I followed these steps with version 4.0), all you have to do to convert a video is access the File menu . Note! You don’t need to open the file you want to change the format to beforehand. Just press the Convert command . You can also press the keyboard shortcut Control + R to quickly access this feature.
In the pop-up window, press the Add button to select all the videos you want to convert. And I say in plural for a good reason: VLC is capable of mass converting the format of more than one video. Obviously, it will execute the tasks sequentially and not in parallel. However, this feature is useful because it allows you to stop worrying about the conversion , even when the number of files you want to convert is high.
Once you have selected the media files you want to convert (they can also be audio files), press Convert/Save .
Next, a pop-up window will open. This is where you will have to select the profile you want to apply during the conversion. What do I mean? VLC understands a profile as a set of parameters that are taken into account when converting the video. The program already has several preconfigured profiles that will make your task easier. However, you can add your own and even edit the existing ones.
To edit a profile, simply click on the wrench button.
In the profile editing window you will see several tabs. The one you are most interested in is Video Codec , as it allows you to adjust the parameters regarding the video. It is possible to choose a format, modify the video resolution, apply filters and much more. There are also some options regarding audio and subtitles. Essentially, what VLC allows in this step is to customize the result obtained with the conversion to the maximum. Therefore, this program does not act as a mere format converter, but as a basic video editor.
Once you’ve customized the profile, save the changes, giving it a name for future recognition . Then, press Browse and choose the destination for the converted video. When you’re all set, click Start .
VLC will then start converting and save the resulting file to the folder you specified. In addition to changing the format, it will apply any edits you selected in the profile, such as lowering the resolution or adding a new FPS rate .
If you want to do a new conversion with the same settings in the future, remember that the VLC profile will be available for selection. You can create as many profiles as you need and thus save time on subsequent conversions. Everything I have explained in this guide is also applicable to other types of files , such as audio files. As I like to say, VLC can handle it all.
