How to choose a used video card

How to buy a video card from your hands and not lose money

Computer hardware is a major expense for many PC gamers. After all, the regional prices on Steam have taught us that the games themselves are cheap. What can not be said about video cards: either miners will sweep everything off the shelves, then NVIDIA will introduce new technology and link sky-high prices to it. You have to save money by using services like Yula and Avito.

Visual inspection

The advantage of Avito and similar flea markets is that prices for used goods are reduced by 30 and even 50%. The downside is that it is difficult to recognize an unscrupulous seller hiding recent repairs or cryptocurrency mining. Be sure to ask him why he put the piece of hardware up for sale and how it was used before.

Arriving at the seller, carefully examine the GPU, asking to remove the card from the computer. Missing box and documentation? Fans are loose, seals are torn off, video outputs are not in order, the textolite has changed color, are there any scratches and traces of soldering? Better to refrain from buying. If the visual test passes, follow the further guidelines.

Performance check

Even before the trip, you should find out the parameters of the model on the manufacturer’s website. Pay attention to core frequency, memory bus, frequency, memory type and size. Load the FurMark program on the USB stick and install it on the seller’s computer. Agree in advance that you will test the video card.

FurMark is a benchmark. Open the program and click on the GPU-Z button. In the new window, you will see the GPU Clock, Bus Width, Memory, Memory Type and Memory Size items. Compare the figures with those from the manufacturer. Then run GPU Stress Test with a resolution of at least 1920×1080 and maximum anti-aliasing. During the stress test, the video card should be loaded at 99-100%. In this case, the temperature graph should initially rise smoothly, and after 1-3 minutes – stabilize. Besides the temperature, the window with the “donut” displays the frequencies of the core and memory. It is convenient and intuitive.

Run the graphics card under FurMark for 10-20 minutes. Make sure that it does not heat up above 75–80 degrees, and that coolers and throttles do not start making noise. Otherwise, it has no place in your system unit.

After checking the characteristics and successfully testing the benchmark, the video card can be taken. If FurMark turns out to be too tough for her, then you were in vain. But they didn’t throw the money away.

Let’s summarize what has been said. Don’t be fooled by too low prices at flea markets. Inspect the video card carefully and ask for documentation. In a conversation with the seller, insist that you can’t do without FurMark (or another benchmark in conjunction with GPU-Z and MSI Afterburner).
