How to Change the Owner and Registry of IBM Laptops

If you’ve purchased a used computer, one of the first things you can do is rename your personal system settings. This type of personal information is configured through the operating system and not by the laptop manufacturer. Windows operating systems allow administrators to modify this data through the Registry Editor utility. Proceed with caution when making changes to this built-in utility, as a misconfiguration of a critical file could compromise system stability.

Instructions

1 Click the “Start” menu, type “regedit” in the “Search” field and press “Enter” if you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7. Click “Start”, select “Run”, type “regedit” at the command line and click “OK” if you are using Windows XP, Windows 2000 or Windows 98.

2 Expand the keys for “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”, “software”, “Microsoft” and “Windows NT”. Click on the “CurrentVersion” subfolder.

3 Double-click the “RegisteredOwner” string value in the right pane. An “Edit String” dialog box will open. Type the name you want to change in the Value Data text field and click “OK.”

4 Double-click the “RegisteredOrganization” string value in the right pane. Type the name of the organization you want to have in the Value Data text field, then click “OK.”

5 Verify the changes were carried out. Click the “Start” menu, select “Run,” type “winver.exe” at the command prompt, and press “Enter.” The “About Windows” window will open, displaying the recently modified values for registered owner and organization.
