How to change the job and profession of villagers in Minecraft

With more than 200 million copies sold, Minecraft is one of the most played games in the world, and the best-selling of all, in fact, today many users use either the latest version of Minecraft or one of the previous versions. Still, not all of the game’s features are obvious. Today we are talking about one of those lesser known functions: How to change the job and profession of the villagers in Minecraft.

How to Change the Job and Profession of Villagers in Minecraft

The professions of the villagers

If you are familiar with the game, chances are you already know what villagers are. They are peaceful creatures that appear in villages, in almost all biomes. The reason for being of these creatures is that you exchange items for emeralds .

And the type of items they will sell you depends on their profession . A librarian, for example, will sell you enchanted books, while a gunsmith will sell you swords.

Villagers also have different clothes depending on their profession. The villages of the villagers and their clothes, they also change depending on the biome where the village is located.

How do the villagers decide their profession?

Villagers work depending on their profession. The farmers tend the gardens of villages and fishermen travel to the port , while others do not do much.

Although not everyone works, everyone has a work block at home, and the type of block will define their profession. Librarians, for example, have a lectern at home; the fishermen have a Barrel near the sea; the farmers have a compost bin near their animal farm , and so on.

The villager’s profession is directly related to his work block. If a Villager is unemployed, he will try to find a job block within 50 or so blocks of where he is.

If a villager finds a work block, he claims it for himself, and no one else can take it. When claiming it, take the profession that corresponds to the block.

If a villager already has a profession, but the block where he works is destroyed, the villager will lose the profession unless you have already bought something from him in the past.

Not all villagers can have a profession. There is a type of villager called Nitwit (“Simple”, in Spanish) who cannot acquire any profession. Also, baby villagers cannot acquire a profession.

How to change the profession of a villager? How to employ an unemployed villager?

As we mentioned earlier, villagers who have never been interacted with lose their profession if their work block is destroyed. By losing their profession, they are unemployed and will seek a new block. Since you know this, you can search for a particular villager’s job block and destroy it to make them unemployed.

Unemployed villagers will try to claim whatever job block is nearby, so just put the job block that corresponds to the profession you want your villager to have.

This is a list of the villagers’ professions and the work blocks that each of them needs:

  • Armor Smith: Melting Furnace
  • Armsmith: Sharpening Stone
  • Blacksmith Tools: Blacksmith Table
  • Priest: Potion Holder
  • Butcher: Smoker
  • Fisherman: Barrel
  • Mason: Stone Cutter
  • Pastor: Loom
  • Farmer: Composter
  • Arrowhead: Arrowhead Mecha
  • Leatherworker: Cauldron
  • Librarian: Lectern
  • Cartographer: Mapping Table

Optimize your villages

If you are viewing this item, you are most likely interested in trading with villagers , but you need items sold by a particular type of villager. What you need to know is that as long as a village has enough food, and enough beds available, the villagers will reproduce and take on new professions.

So, the best way to craft villagers  with new professions, is to take care of creating beds and work blocks, and feeding the villagers.

Villagers are very useful creatures in the game, as they are willing to exchange items that we all have for emeralds, and then exchange those emeralds for very valuable items.

For this reason, it is very common to establish farms near the villages to take full advantage of the mechanics of these unique creatures. We invite you to continue researching the villagers, so you can get the most out of one of the most useful mechanics in the game.
