How to change the battery of the DualShock 4 controller

There are two main reasons that lead the user to want to change the battery of the DualShock 4 : the increase of the autonomy by installing a battery with more capacity or the replacement because the original one no longer works as well as it should.

For those who want more hours of play, one of the alternatives is to exchange it with a larger capacity battery. The controls come standard with a capacity of 800 mA, but you can find compatible models with the DualShock 4 (the same shape and size) of up to 2000 mA .

Contrary to what it may seem, this procedure is quite simple to perform, not requiring a professional technical service.

But before starting, we warn you that  according to the product manual, if it is opened by unauthorized persons by the official technical staff, the warranty is lost.

“The warranty is lost when the product has been modified or manipulated by personnel not authorized by Sony.”

Materials and tools

  • Small Philips tip screwdriver.
  • Plastic tool for opening locks on equipment.
  • Lithium-ion battery for the DualShock 4.

Changing the battery

Step 1

Using a Philips screwdriver, remove the four screws on the back of the remote. Store them in a safe container.

Step 2

Insert the plastic tool between the slots in the knob, applying a little pressure until the two parts disengage. Repeat the process on the right side of the remote.

Step 3

Perform the same procedure on the top of the remote near the touch panel. When releasing the two parts, watch out for the cable that remains connected to the plate at the bottom of the remote. Open carefully so as not to damage or break the cable.

We’ll be left with three little pieces: 2 trigger springs and 1 Options button extension unit . Keep them in a safe place.

Step 4

Carefully disconnect the flat cable connecting the part containing the buttons (directional, analog, touch, etc.). After separating the two parts of the remote, separate the front cover.

Step 5

Next to the battery, you can see two cables (black and red) that connect the battery to the board with a kind of connector. To remove it, you just have to turn it gently to the sides, forcing it up a little too.

It is done. The battery is disconnected and ready to be replaced. You just have to take the new one and make the replacement. To mount the DS4, you just have to follow the same steps in this manual, but in reverse.
