How to switch Apple ID accounts on iPad

If you need to change your Apple ID on iPad , all you have to do is access the device settings and select the option to disconnect the iCloud account in use. Once this is done, you can sign in with a new Apple ID or create one on the spot. Find everything explained in detail right below.

How to Change Apple ID on iPad without Losing Data

The procedure for switching Apple IDs on iPad is quick and easy. In fact, simply access the device settings, press the button to disconnect the account in use and log in with the new Apple ID.

Before showing you how to proceed in detail, I want to emphasize that it is possible to change Apple ID on iPad without losing data . In particular, it will be useful for you to know that all data (e.g. photos, videos, documents) saved locally on your iPad will not be deleted and will also be available using an Apple ID other than the one in use. The same goes for apps you’ve downloaded on your iPad.

Furthermore, I would like to point out that before logging out of your account, you can choose whether to keep a copy of the data relating to calendars, contacts and Safari and the passwords saved on Keychain. Note, however, that any data you synced with iCloud will be removed from your device but will still be available in iCloud and on any devices associated with your Apple ID that have syncing turned on.

In any case, it will be useful to know that, before logging out of your Apple ID, you can download photos from iCloud and, if you have documents stored in iCloud Drive , save them locally on the iPad using the Files app.

Having clarified this, take your iPad, access the iPadOS Settings by pressing the gear wheel icon and tap on your name displayed at the top left. Now, press the item Exit , enter the password of the Apple ID in use in the appropriate field and press the option Deactivate , at the top right.

At this point, on the screen Do you want to keep a copy of your data on iPad? , specify which data you want to keep by moving the lever relating to the options of your interest ( Calendars , Contacts , Keychains and Safari ) from OFF to ON and press the item Exit twice consecutively to disconnect your current Apple ID.

Once this is done, access the iPadOS Settings again, press the item Log in on iPad located at the top left and, if you want to create a new Apple ID , select the options Don’t have an Apple ID or have you forgotten it? and Create Apple ID .

If, on the other hand, you want to access an existing account, enter the email address associated with the Apple ID to be linked in the Email field and tap the Next option . Then also type the password in the appropriate field, press Next again and, if two-factor authentication is active, type the 6-digit code that was sent to you on another device associated with the Apple ID to which you are trying to access.

Then also enter the code you use to unlock the device on which the previous verification code was sent to you and tap the Finish item at the top right. Then choose whether or not to merge the data you have previously saved on the iPad to iCloud by selecting the option of your interest between Merge and Do not merge .

How to change Apple ID on used iPad

If your intention is to change Apple ID on used iPad , I am sorry to tell you that you cannot do it yourself as you need to know the previous owner’s Apple ID password.

This means that the only solution available to you is to contact the person who gave you or sold you the used iPad: if they are willing to provide you with their password, you will be able to disconnect your iPad from the Apple ID in use following the directions I gave you earlier to change Apple ID on iPad .

Alternatively, you can ask the previous owner to erase the tablet remotely, so that it is reset to factory settings and can be configured as a new device.

To do this, simply connect to the iCloud Find My page and log in with the credentials of the Apple ID associated with the iPad to be initialized. In the new screen that appears, you must then press on the items All devices and iPad of [name] . Finally, the previous owner of the iPad must click on the Erase the iPad item , press the Erase button , enter your Apple ID password and select the Next and Finish options to start remote initialization.

I point out that it is also possible to proceed in the same way using the Dove’é app on a device (e.g. iPhone) associated with the same Apple ID used on the iPad to be initialised. To learn more, you can refer to my guide on how to format iPad for sale .

Complete the restore procedure, you will be able to configure the tablet and associate your Apple ID. In this regard, my guide on how to configure iPad may be useful .

How to Change Apple ID on iPad without Password

If you’re wondering if it’s possible to change Apple ID on iPad without password , I’m sorry to tell you that the answer is no because you need the access key associated with it to log out of your account.

However, if you don’t remember your password, you can start the procedure that allows you to recover it directly from your iPad using two-factor authentication , which must already be enabled to proceed with password recovery.

To proceed, access the iPadOS Settings by pressing the gear wheel icon , tap your name and, on the Apple ID screen, select the Sign out option .

At this point, click on the item Forgot your password? , enter your phone number in the appropriate field and tap the Next button at the top right. Now, if you have another device associated with your Apple ID, you should have received a notification to reset your password: press the notification in question and follow the instructions shown on the screen to set a new passkey.

If, on the other hand, you don’t have any other Apple devices available, select the option Don’t have any Apple devices available? present on the Continue screen on another Apple device , press the item Send the code and enter the 6-digit code that was sent to you via SMS to the phone number indicated above.

Once this is done, type the unlock code of your iPad in the appropriate field, enter the new password to be associated with your account in the Password and Confirm fields and press the Next button . For the detailed procedure, I leave you to my guide on how to recover Apple ID password .

Once the procedure for recovering your access key has been completed, you can change your Apple ID on the iPad by following the instructions I have given you in the previous paragraphs of this tutorial.

How to Change Apple ID on Locked iPad

If you need to change Apple ID on a locked iPad , as you can imagine, you need to unlock the device first.

If by “locked iPad” you mean that the device screen does not respond to touch, I recommend that you force restart it: if you have an iPad without a Home button , press and quickly release the Volume Up button , then the Volume Down button and finally hold Press and hold the top button (the one you use to turn on iPad ) until the device starts restarting. If, on the other hand, you have an iPad with a Home button , hold down the Home button and the top button at the same time until you see the Apple logo. To find out more, I leave you with my guide on how to unlock locked iPad .

At this point, if iPad starts working properly again, you can change the Apple ID in use by following the instructions I gave you in the previous paragraphs of this guide .

If, on the other hand, the tablet continues to freeze, you can connect it to your computer via the USB cable , start the formatting procedure using the device keys and then download and install the latest version of iPadOS . For the detailed procedure, I refer you to my guide on how to format locked iPad .

If doing so resolves your lock issues, you’ll be able to set up your iPad and sign in with your Apple ID.

Finally, I would like to point out that it is not possible to change the Apple ID on an iPad locked by the owner , that is, when the device has been set in lost mode.

How to change Apple ID password on iPad

If your intention is simply to change Apple ID password on iPad , you can do it by proceeding directly from the tablet settings.

So take your iPad, press the gear wheel icon to access the iPadOS Settings and touch your name displayed at the top left. Now, select the Password and security option and, on the Sign in to iCloud screen , enter your current password and press the OK button .

Once this is done, tap on the Change password item , re-enter the current password associated with your Apple ID in the Current field and type the new password in the New and Verify fields .

Please note that the password must be at least 8 characters and include a number, an uppercase letter and a lowercase letter. Moreover, since the password allows you not only to install applications (including paid ones) but also to protect your data, manage payment methods, completely reset iPad (and all devices associated with your Apple ID) and much more , I recommend that you use a secure password .

Finally, press the Modify option and select the Don’t sign out option , to set the new password and avoid disconnecting all the devices associated with it from your Apple ID. If, on the other hand, you have changed the access key because you are afraid that someone knows your previous password, tap the item Exit from other devices to perform the forced exit.

After saving the changes, enter the new password in the appropriate field visible on the Apple ID Password screen and select the Sign in option . If you chose the option to sign out of all devices, you will need to sign in to iCloud again from all those devices. To learn more about this, you can take a look at my guide on how to change your Apple ID password .
