How to cancel your Xbox Game Pass subscription

Xbox Game Pass offers great value for money, with a catalog of over 100 games that you can play for a monthly fee. But Netflix-style service isn’t for everyone.

If you’d like to cancel your Game Pass membership, turn off recurring billing, or change your plan, we’ll show you how.

How to cancel your Game Pass subscription

Go to account.microsoft.com and log in. On the home screen, you may see a Subscriptions box where you can choose to view All Subscriptions .

If not, select Services & Subscriptions from the ribbon at the top of the screen.

Scroll down to Xbox Game Pass or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate .

Click Manage .

Your first option here is Cancel subscription . Click it.

Now, Microsoft may try to keep you subscribed here and they do this by asking if you’d like to stop recurring subscriptions. If you are sure you want to cancel Game Pass, press Turn off recurring billing .

After processing your request, you will see a confirmation screen informing you that you will no longer be charged on the next billing date. This is when your Game Pass subscription ends.

Please note that it is not possible to cancel your Game Pass subscription with immediate effect.

There is only one exemption: if you are a resident of Israel, you are entitled to cancel a subscription immediately and get a refund for the remaining time left on your subscription. You can do this by contacting support.microsoft.com .

How to cancel subscriptions on your Xbox

You can check the status of your Microsoft subscriptions on your Xbox console, but there’s no way to properly cancel your Game Pass there.

On Xbox, go to Settings> Accounts> Subscriptions .

Here you can view all your subscriptions and change or add new billing details.

There’s also an option to manage subscriptions, but it’s just a link that opens in Xbox’s outdated Edge browser. It is much easier to go to account.microsoft.com on your phone or computer.

How to turn off recurring billing on Xbox One

Not long ago, Microsoft simply let you turn off auto-renewal with the click of a button. Now, if you want to turn off recurring billing (useful when you have a Game Pass code or Xbox gift card) you can follow the steps above.

Alternatively, visit account.microsoft.com and go to Services and Subscriptions .

Find the Game Pass section and select Manage .

Under Payment settings , look for Has recurring billing . To the right of this is the Change option .

Click here and the drop-down menu offers two more options: Change plan and Turn off recurring billing .

Choose the latter, then confirm your selection by pressing Turn off recurring billing .

How to change your Game Pass membership level

There are three different levels of Xbox Game Pass: Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Xbox Game Pass for PC, and Xbox Game Pass.

You can see the options on the official Xbox Game Pass site , but the main difference (outside of using a console or computer) is that Ultimate also lets you stream games to your phone or tablet and includes the benefits of Xbox Live Gold and EA Play titles.

If you are already signed up for an Xbox Game Pass subscription, you must first cancel your subscription.

Wait until the date shown on the confirmation screen, the day the subscription is no longer active.

After this date, you can sign up for a different Game Pass membership level.

How to change your Game Pass subscription payment plan

In addition to different types of membership, you also have multiple payment plans for all levels of Game Pass. This allows you to pay a flat monthly fee or save money by paying upfront for a three-month, six-month, annual or two-year subscription.

Note: It’s currently cheaper to pay monthly than to upgrade to a three- or six-month payment plan (you’ll save a couple of cents, at best, though).

Go to account.microsoft.com , then to Services and Subscriptions .

Find your Game Pass subscription and press Manage .

Click Change and from the drop-down menu select Change Plan .

Your current plan is labeled as such. Now, click on any other payment plan.

Below your card details (and the option to change the card you use) is a notice specifying the amount you will be charged on the next billing date.

Click Confirm to accept.

How to rejoin Xbox Game Pass

If you’ve decided to re-sign up for Game Pass after canceling, it’s pretty simple. You can register again from your console or go to the Microsoft account page.

Choose Services and Subscriptions .

Scroll to the previously active subscription and choose Renew .

On the next page, select Join to restart your subscription.

Alternatively, if you have a code, click on the three points to redeem it.

Pros and cons of canceling your Xbox Game Pass membership

Before canceling, it is worth evaluating what you will lose (in exchange for the money saved). The obvious is that over 100 games can be downloaded and played as part of your subscription.

Remember, if you share the game on Xbox, anyone else using your home console will also lose access to the Games Pass library and benefits.

You may find it better to change your membership level, rather than delete it altogether. For example, the most expensive level, Ultimate, lets you play any game in the Game Pass library on consoles and PCs (and even stream on Android phones).

If you’re playing on only one device, upgrading to standard Xbox Game Pass for PC or console might be a worthwhile move to save money.

Xbox Live Gold, which offers players free monthly games and discounts, is also included in Game Pass Ultimate. If you are a current Ultimate subscriber looking to cancel your subscription, please note that you will need to purchase a separate Gold subscription to play most of the online games.

Also, you will not receive any refunds for the end of the subscription. Instead, you have access to the service and all its benefits until the start of your next billing cycle.

Game (Pass) Over, Man

And this is all. Follow these steps to cancel your Game Pass membership. On the other hand, if you don’t want to miss out on all the membership benefits, it’s just as easy to switch to a plan that better suits your gaming needs.
