Nintendo has detailed its Switch Online subscription service. The system will operate along the lines of PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold and will provide members with a range of online features and bonuses.
- The ability to play online
- Access a library of classic games from the NES
- Access to cloud saves
- Accessing the smartphone app
- Exclusive offers and bonuses for subscribers
The Nintendo Switch Online subscription will be available for both individuals and family access (up to eight accounts).
When purchasing a personal subscription, players will have three options.
- 1 month (30 days) – 279 rubles
- 3 months (90 days) – 559 rubles
- 12 months (365 days) – 1399 rubles
When you purchase “family” access, the Switch Online subscription will have only one option – 12 months for 2,449 rubles.
All the benefits of Nintendo Switch Online will be available to everyone in the family group. Anyone can purchase a subscription, not just the creator of the team. A “team” of eight is registered on the official website , and each user can only have access to one family account.
Individual subscriptions can be purchased from Nintendo eShop, the official Nintendo website and retail stores. The family subscription will only be available through the eShop and website.
Initially, the service was supposed to start in the fall of 2017, but the launch was postponed. It is now slated for September 19. Nintendo will provide seven days of free access to all Switch users.
Due to technical work related to the launch of the service, the eShop will go for maintenance at 03:00 Moscow time on September 19.
The main function of the service is to provide access to multiplayer in games. It is required for all Nintendo titles such as Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as well as most third-party games. For a complete list, visit the Nintendo website .
Regardless, free multiplayer games like Fortnite, Paladins and Arena of Valor do not require a subscription .
Local co-op will also not require a Switch Online subscription.
At the launch of Nintendo Switch Online, players will have access to 20 classic NES games . The library will grow in the future. All games support local and online multiplayer.
The starter lineup will include The Legend of Zelda, Balloon Fight, Super Mario Bros. 3, Dr. Mario, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Ghosts’n Goblins, Pro Wrestling, Excitebike, Yoshi, Ice Hockey, Baseball and more.
It is not yet known whether games from later consoles such as the SNES, Nintendo 64 and GameCube will appear on the service. Earlier in an interview with IGN, the head of the American division of Nintendo Reggie Fiss-Ame said that the company is considering Nintendo Switch Online as the successor to the Virtual Console for Wii, Wii U and the 3DS family.
Virtual Console is a service emulator that offers NES, SNES, Game Boy, GB Color, GB Advance, Nintendo DS and some other classic consoles games.
Another important feature of Switch Online is the ability to save your game data to the cloud . If you lose or break your console, you can transfer your progress and continue playing on another console.
The data will be saved automatically , but the frequency of uploads to the cloud is not yet known. Also, players, most likely, will be able to “dump” data to the cloud in manual mode .
However, some games, such as Splatoon 2, Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu / Eevee, FIFA 19 and Dark Souls Remastered, will not support cloud saves. In a comment to Gameinformer, a Nintendo spokesperson explained that in such titles, cloud storage can be used to gain an unfair advantage – for example, the player can restore items sold to other users or get a higher online level in the game.
If you believe anonymous sources, before publishing their games in the eShop, developers can simply tick the box next to “Access to cloud saves.” There will be patches for titles in the eShop that will start supporting the feature in the future.
The Nintendo Switch Online app is used for voice chat. This feature is currently available in Splatoon 2, and will add Diablo III , Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, ARMS and NES Nintendo Switch Online in the future .
Also, the mobile application allows you to view the map rotation in Splatoon 2, statistics and the store of things.
Exclusive Subscriber Offers
Players will be able to purchase NES controllers for the Nintendo Switch. They will function like regular gamepads and are designed for classic Nintendo Entertainment System games available via subscription.
Also, when purchasing a 12 month subscription, players will receive a code to download exclusive equipment for Splatoon 2.

Questions to the service
Nintendo did not mention one of perhaps the most important features of Xbox Live Gold and PlayStation Plus – dedicated servers. You will also need them for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which will be released in December.
Ever since Super Smash Bros Melee, fans have been asking for dedicated servers for stable online gaming without lag.
