Hades: how to catch all the fish and their rewards

As probably the last game one could hope to have a fishing mechanic, Hades surprisingly does it, and even more hilariously, it works almost identically to Animal Crossing’s fishing system. After obtaining the Fishing Rod, the Prince of the Underworld can cast it into the depths of lava and rivers of souls. If that’s not a fun addition to the game, what is?

After catching a fish, Zagreus can exchange it for some rewards with the Head Chef in the Hall of House of Hades. Each region of the underworld has different fish that deserve different rewards, as well as rarity levels. Here we show you how to start fishing and how to catch each fish for a nice reward.

How to get the fishing rod

To unlock the ability to buy the Fishing Pole, Zagreus will need to have done three things: buy the Source Chambers in Tartarus, buy the Fated List of Minor Prophecies, and reach the Temple of Styx at least once.

Once these conditions are met, the fishing rod will be available for purchase from the home contractor for a diamond. Diamonds can be earned through a few methods, but primarily by defeating Bone Hydra at the end of Asphodel.

How to fish

After purchasing the fishing rod, small lights will begin to appear that designate fishing locations throughout the underworld. Sometimes Zagreus comments on their presence, which is good, as it’s easy to miss them sometimes. A “ding” also sounds at certain points to indicate that the camera has a fishing spot.

Just walk up to the spot and hit the interact button and the line will launch. Zagreus must press the button again to roll up the line when it sinks below the surface with a flash, meaning it has a bite.

The speed at which the player reacts will determine the rarity of the fish they catch. If they press the button in less than 0.34 seconds, the fish is guaranteed to be rare or better, with a 1/21 chance of being legendary. From 0.34 seconds to 0.68 seconds, the fish will be common, or at 1/21 probability, rare. After 0.68 seconds, the capture will be lost. The cork can “rock” up to a maximum of three times before the fish bites, but it can bite at any point before the third movement.

Aside from the basics of fishing, there are some useful things to know. First, there are ways to increase your chances of finding a fishing spot. Charon’s Well offers a skeletal lure, ensuring a fishing spot will appear on the next eligible camera. It costs 60 Obols.

A second option is a blessing from Poseidon, called “Huge Catch.” This Legendary Boon is quite rare, but it will increase the chance of a Fishing Spot spawning in each chamber by 20 percent. It also removes the requirement that a fishing spot not appear on a certain number of cameras. Requires having the Ocean’s Bounty and Sunken Treasure rewards, or Ocean’s Bounty and the Conch Shell keepsake. The first time you find this blessing, there will be no prerequisites and it will be the only option offered.

Each region in the game has three potential fish: a common fish, a rare fish, and a legendary fish. In Tartarus, the rewards are all different amounts of gems.

The common fish of Tartarus is the Hellfish, which can be traded for five Gemstones. The rare fish is the Knucklehead, which is worth 20 gems, and the Legendary fish is the Scyllascion, which is worth 30 gems.

Tartarus chambers have a 25 percent chance of spawning a fishing spot, if the chamber is eligible (that is, it has water or magma to fish for) and only if 10 or more chambers have passed since the last spot appeared fishing.

All Asphodel fish have the appearance of lava, just like Asphodel himself. The common fish is the Slavug, which can be exchanged for a single Chthonic Key. Asphodel’s rare fish is the Chrustacean, which is exchanged for three Chthonic Keys, and the legendary fish, which is worth 5 Keys, is the Flameater.

Fishing spots have a 10 percent chance of showing up in Asphodel, provided 10 cameras have passed since the last one.

Like Asphodel, Elysium cameras that are eligible for a fishing spot will have a 10 percent chance of spawning one if there hasn’t been one in at least 10 cameras. All the fish here are traded for nectar.

The common fish is the Chlam, which is worth a nectar; the rare fish is the Charp, exchanged for two Nectar; and the legendary fish is the Seamare, which is worth three nectar.

In the Temple of Styx, fishing spots will only appear in a couple of spots around the main hub (where Cerberus and Charon are) if there hasn’t been a fishing spot in 10 chambers, and not in the Satyr Tunnels. They have a 10 percent chance of showing up.

Like Tartarus, the fish reward Zagreus with precious stones when they are exchanged, although a few more. The gupp is the common fish, worth 20 gems; the Scuffer is the rare fish, exchanged for 40 Gemstones, and the Stonewhal is the Legendary fish, worth a whopping 150 Gemstones.

It may come as a surprise to some, but yes, fishing spots may appear in Chaos, the realm accessed through the Gates of Chaos and the home of the Primal Chaos, the being that created everything and everyone at the beginning of the times. There is only a seven percent chance that a fishing spot will appear here, and there must be at least 10 cameras from the last one.

The fish here are worth different levels of Darkness, the currency of the Mirror of Night. The common Chaos fish is the Mati, exchanged for 100 Darkness. The rare fish is the Projelly, which is worth 250 Darkness. Finally, the legendary fish, the Voidskate, is valued at 500 dark.

Lastly, fishing spots can appear in Greece. Either they will appear in the rivers around Persephone’s hut, in the small ponds that lead to the hut, or in the pools of water in the area with the final boss battle after Persephone’s hut is no longer accessible with the true ending.
