Google introduces Bard, its chat AI to compete with ChatGPT

Google promises high standards of quality, security and grounding in real information; tool will be made available gradually.

ChatGPT has dominated tech conversations in recent months. Among the issues, one did not concern him directly, but the competition: Google . How will the search giant react? Will she lose dominance of internet searches? This Monday (6), we started to know the answer: the company announced Bard , its conversation service using artificial intelligence.

According to the company’s blog post introducing the novelty, Bard is an “experimental conversational service using artificial intelligence”. He will answer questions from users in the search and, of course, chat.

Bard is based on LaMDA, which stands for “language model for dialog applications” . The conversation tool, however, will be a lighter version of the full model. This way, you can use less processing power and reach more users.

Google promises updated results

Among the model’s anticipated uses, Google says Bard could help “explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old, or learn more about the world’s best soccer strikers, and then , train to develop your skills”.

In a short shared video, Google shows this first case in practice. The user types into the search bar “What discoveries from the James Webb Space Telescope can I talk to my nine-year-old son about?”.

AI then brings news in a simplified way, such as galaxies nicknamed “green peas”, images of 13 billion-year-old galaxies and the first photographs of an exoplanet (here, it even explains what an exoplanet is).

In the published text, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, also says that Bard will be able to use the internet to be able to provide updated and high quality answers.

The choice of this telescope does not appear to be by chance. ChatGPT knowledge would only go until 2021. JWST was released on December 25, 2021.

Indeed, ChatGPT and other artificial intelligences seem to have trouble bringing back factually correct information .

Bard arrives first for “trusted testers”

Unlike what OpenAI did with ChatGPT, Google is not going to release Bard to everyone.

According to Pichai, the software will be available to a group of “trusted testers” this Monday (6), but will be available more widely in the coming weeks.

This doesn’t come as a surprise. Google has always had a more conservative approach to artificial intelligence.

The company feared what could happen if the tool was misused by users, as this would damage the brand’s reputation.

With the release of ChatGPT, however, everything changed. Google began to see itself threatened by the new technology and tried to move to provide an answer.

Microsoft is one of OpenAI’s biggest investors and has partnerships to bring the company’s technologies into its products. Recently, users got access to a new version of Bing with ChatGPT integrated .

Despite having released the news earlier than expected, the text released by Google emphasizes that Bard’s responses reach a high degree of quality, security and foundation in real information.

The company also points out that it was one of the first ads to publish a set of artificial intelligence principles, still in 2018.
