Germán Bannen

Germán Bannen Lay : Architect. He was born in Talagante on May 25, 1928 and died in Santiago de Chile on October 14 , 2019 .

Germán Bannen Lay obtained his architecture degree in 1956 , being part of the first generation of architects from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso . After that, he specialized in Urban Development at the Center for Ekistic Studies (science that conceives human settlements from all points of view) in Athens , Greece .

He received the National Prize for Architecture and Urbanism in 2003. At his death he was an Honorary Member of the Order of Argentine Architects.

Professional work

His professional work was developed as an urban advisor and architect for the Municipality of Providencia, a division of the Chilean capital, where he was from 1962 to 1968 Urban advisor and Director of the Department of Urban Development.

From 1989 to 2015, he was an Urban Matters Advisor in the same commune. He was also director of the Providencia CORMU Society since 1973.

Germán Bannen designed and executed some of the most important architectural and urban works in the Providencia district, including the Sculpture Park, Nueva Providencia Avenue, Balmaceda Park Literary Café, Bustamante Park Literary Café, Club Providencia, Plaza Pedro de Valdivia and Remodeling of Avenida Pocuro, among others.

He was a professor at the School of Architecture and Urbanism of the Catholic University of Chile, an institution in which he trained a large number of generations of architects. He was also a teacher at the universities of La Serena and at the Federico Santa María de Valparaíso Technical University.

He was National Director of the College of Architects of Chile, between 1992 and 1996, an institution from which he received the Alfredo Johnson Award in 1995, for his distinguished work as a municipal official in the district of Providencia.

He passed away on October 14, 2019 at the age of 91.
