Fix Office Problems with Office Repair : A Simple and Immediate Operation.
If you’re having trouble with Microsoft Office programs, one of the first things to try is Office Repair.
This operation can quickly solve any Office problems (slowness, opening, closing, saving, etc.) without further intervention.
What is Office Repair
The Office Recovery is an integrated recovery features in Office (in all versions of Office 2003), which automatically, without your intervention, allows you to correct any problems and Office errors.
Recovery basically removes any changes made over time to Office registry entries or Office installation files and replenishes any lost or corrupted data in program system files or Office registry entries that have been damaged or deleted (from malware infections , system crashes etc) returning Office to how it should be at the time of installation.
However, it does not affect any changes you may have made to the Office user options.
For example, choosing whether or not to display templates on startup with Office 2013 is an option that is not touched by Office recovery.
I emphasize that the recovery is safe: it does not involve the loss of your personal Office files .
Just as a precaution: in very rare cases the recovery fails, when the damage to the Office installation files and registry entries is excessive and therefore following the attempted recovery Office may fail to start.
Therefore, as a precaution, I recommend that you have the Office installation CD ready or a copy of Office available for reinstallation.
Either way, your personal files are not touched and remain on the computer.
The instructions for repairing Office vary slightly depending on your operating system and the version of Office you are trying to repair, but in general the instructions below apply to everyone.
Repair Office 2003, 2007, 2010, and 2013
The same recovery functionality is present in all versions of Office (at least from Office XP that I know of), even if it has taken on different names in the various versions.
In Office 2003 and Office 2007 it is called Detect and Repair , while in later versions (Office 2010 and 2013) it was renamed simply Repair.
Apart from the differences in the name and the few specific technical differences in operation, in all versions of Office this feature is very easy to use :
- close all Office programs openon your computer;
- open Programs and Features(in Windows XP : Start, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs; in Windows Vista / 7: Start, Control Panel, Programs and Features; in Windows 8 and 8.1: tap at the bottom right, Search, type Panel Control Panel , select Control Panel );
- look for Microsoft Officein the list of programs installed on your computer. Depending on the version you use you could find for example Microsoft Professional Plus 2013, or Microsoft Office Professional 2010, or Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 etc. This is the version that is installed on your computer:
- right-click on the Microsoft Office entry and select Change:
- at this point the Microsoft Office Setupscreen will open . Select Restore (Note: If you have Office 2013, you may have the choice between Quick Restore or Online Restore . I recommend Quick Restore as your first choice, and if it doesn’t work choose Online Restore instead):
- confirm with Continue(bottom right of the window);
- at this point the recovery process starts, which takes several minutes. While restoring I advise you not to open any Office programs Do not worry if it seems frozen and the bar showing progress does not move:
- when finished, you will see a message that the reset is complete:
- click on Close, and when the window appears that warns you that you need to restart, confirm and restart your computer .
