First menstruation: How To Discuss With A Girl

An online poll conducted by Glocalities in March 2019 found that 75% of Russians disapprove of open discussion of their periods. Despite the fact that every second woman gets in the way of menstruation, about half of the respondents at least once hid the fact of menstruation from others.

10 years of menstruation/First menstruation: How To Discuss With A Girl

Menstruation is a normal physiological process that most women encounter on a regular basis. Over the course of a lifetime, the total duration of menstruation for each of us is about 10 years. Unfortunately, for a considerable part of this time, many women in various countries face the stigmatization of menstruation.

They are not only not ready to discuss with anyone their periods and their condition, but even the word “menstruation” itself is not always daring to pronounce, replacing it with common euphemisms “these days”, “red days of the calendar”.

The problem with the attitude towards menstruation in society is so serious that it has been brought to the attention of the United Nations. In 2018, the UN launched a dedicated global program to help fight the stigmatization of menstruation around the world.

It is very important

Almost every second parent simply does not know how to talk about such a delicate topic with their own children, and if necessary, such a conversation feels awkward. 34% of the women surveyed and 46% of fathers even hope to avoid such a conversation [1] and expect that children will receive all the necessary information at school.

This conversation is important. The first period is an exciting event for both the girl and her parents. The girl needs to be ready for them, and moms and dads should support her during this period and answer the questions that arise. Everyone needs to remember and know that menstruation is not a shame.

We talked with Elena about how to properly prepare a girl for her first menstruation, how to talk about this delicate topic, what happens in the body when the cycle is established, why menstruation can be irregular, where to find the missing information about women’s health, menstruation and much more.
