FIFA 20 – fouls, free kicks, penalties and set pieces in detail

The free throws FIFA 20 can be intimidating at the beginning, because the screen shows a lot of information and you have to master various stages of the launch. That said, set pieces have always been difficult to master (even though this year is particularly difficult) so let’s go over them all.

We are going to explain to you how to take free kicks efficiently, how to score penalties and tips for throw-ins and corners, so you can dominate the set pieces.

FIFA 20 – free kicks in detail: how to shoot and score free kicks

For the first time in at least three years, FIFA 20’s free kicks have really changed, bringing a new system. Most of the old types of free kicks remain, but the way they are executed is completely different. Let’s start by explaining how this new free throw system works.

In recent years free kicks were taken naturally, usually indicating where you wanted to shoot and using the left stick to give it a bit of effect, but now there are four phases to taking a free kick in FIFA 20, plus a fourth optional.

First you have to aim, then choose the power, then you apply the effect and the optional part is the perfect completion mechanic. Here we explain all the steps.

How to take free kicks in FIFA 20 step 1: aiming

First of all, align the small aiming grid (the white circle) according to the type of free throw you want to take. If you want a falling effect you should aim the crosshairs a little higher than where you really want to launch, if you want a side effect aim a little more out, etc. Below we go into more detail, but we advise that moving this circle is very difficult on purpose; You will find that the closer you are to where you want it to stay, the more it will try to separate. Take your time and move the left stick gently to align the ball correctly.

How to take free kicks in FIFA 20 step 2: power

To give the right power to the shot you have to hold the fire button as usual. Pressing it will lock the aiming grid, confirming where your player will be aiming. Usually two or three bars of power is ideal depending on the distance.

Now it is the turn of the effect. To do this you have to move the right stick in different ways. For drop shots, move the stick down and then back up, for example. This should be done while your player is running, before he reaches the ball. The speed at which you move the stick determines the amount of spin. We will explain it in detail below.

Finally, you can choose a perfect finish: the mechanic of hitting the fire button a second time just before hitting the ball to get a better shot and improve your chances of scoring. You don’t have to and you can even disable the option in the menus (we usually do it). If you want to try your luck, quickly hit the fire button just as your player’s foot begins to approach the ball. Too fast or too late and you will fail miserably.

How to take all types of free kicks in FIFA 20, including direct, powerful, spin and falling free kicks

In our experience, the most reliable methods of executing book shots are those of Youtuber Krasi , which we detail here below. This is his video explaining them (starts from minute 3):

These are all types of free kicks, when to use them and how to take them.

Free kick type Optimal distance Ideal foot Necessary skill Description
Free kick with spin Short (Less than 20 meters) Right on the right side of the goal
Left on the left side
High curve Aim about a meter out of the nearby pole. 2-3 bars of power. Move the right stick sideways, in the direction of the player’s back, and then in the direction they are running.
Free kick with fall Short Right on the right side
Left on the left side
High Free
Kick Low Curve
Reticle on the square behind the barrier. 1,2-2 power bars. Move the right stick down and then up. Do it fast for more spin.
Trivela free kick Short Right on the left side
Left on the right side
High free kick High
curve
Use the left stick to aim one meter away from the nearest post as in Spin Free Kick. Run straight for the ball. 2-3 bars of power. Move the right stick down, from the player’s back, up, and then in the direction the player is running. Like the shot with effect, but with the opposite foot.
Free kick with mixed effect Indifferent Indifferent Power and high free throw Aim for the side closest to the goal, above the barrier. 2-3 bars of power. Move the right stick down and then out, mixing the falling free kick and spin free kick.
Free kick Folha Seca Long (More than 20 meters) Right on the right side.
Left on the left side.
Power and high free throw Aim for the closest squad behind the barrier. Charge 2-3 bars of power. Move the right stick down, up and down again.
Free kick / Fake and pass Very short Indifferent It’s the same Call both players with l2 + R1. Perform the feint with X + Square / A + X. Press Triangle / Y and point the right stick at the unmarked player.

How to shoot penalties in FIFA 20

Penalties, like free kicks, have undergone changes and are now more difficult to score.

How to shoot penalties in FIFA 20:

  • Aim the reticle and try to keep it as much as possible in one place.
  • Hold the fire button to get the right power (we recommend not going over 2.5 bars).
  • Keep holding the grid in place. If you move it, the circle around the reticle will be larger, reflecting that the shot could be less accurate and increasing your chances of missing.
  • By default, the penalty mark indicator is visible. That means if you play locally they can see where you are pointing. You can deactivate it by pressing up on the D-Pad. We recommend that you practice with the grid first until you are able to pull from memory.

How to throw corners, throw-ins and goal kicks in FIFA 20

Corners and throw-ins are more or less the same as in FIFA 19, although it seems that targeting certain places, such as the first suit, does not perform as well as last year. You have a lot of control over the ball, here we show you how to make the most of it.

How to throw corners in FIFA 20

  • Choose a player– choose the player you want to shoot with (forget their position for the moment) by pressing L1 / LB until you find who you want.
  • Aim the ball– move the yellow cursor on the ground with the left stick to choose where you want the ball to go. Choose the power with the Square / X fire button (less bar is a more pumped ball, more bar is more direct) and the cursor will stay fixed.
  • Position your player– move your player a couple of meters behind the mark on the ground.
  • Take the corner– take the corner by pressing Square / X again.

The best corners, in our experience, tend to go to the far post, where there is more space for a player to head in the race or give your players a certain angle of shot, although in general they are more difficult to score than those in FIFA 19 .

How to serve out and perform service feints in FIFA 20:

Again, little change from FIFA 19. Serve threats are just as useful and performed the same.

How to perform a throw-in feint:

  • Decide who you want to shoot and who you want to fake– we recommend taking into account the positions of the players. Forwards tend to go forward, defenders backwards, and midfielders move the ball in any direction. Make some space by scrolling in that direction.
  • Perform Fake Pass– Controlled the same as Fake Shot: Square or Circle and then X on Playstation, X or B and then A on Xbox. When you press the second button (X / A) point the left stick towards your target to launch the ball.
