Everything you need to know about the Samsung Galaxy S20 and Xiaomi Mi 10

Features and performance in games – we tell you why the new flagships on Android are good

On February 11 and 13, Samsung and Xiaomi presented their top-end phones. They are attracted not by design, but by the capabilities inherent in them – from communication to gaming. Detailed characteristics of the announced new products are in our material.

Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra

Samsung’s flagship lineup includes three models: Galaxy S20, S20 + and S20 Ultra. There is no conventionally budget one (like the Galaxy S10e) among them. The Korean company claims that the calling of new smartphones is to create video content. No wonder she streamed the Galaxy Unpacked event from the Galaxy S20. Phones record video in 8K resolution at 30fps. You can upload it to YouTube, watch it on your Samsung QLED 8K TV, or simply crop a beautiful frame from your video. Optical stabilization is assisted by AI that analyzes motion – shoot even on the run. A special “Multi-shot” mode clicks a bunch of photos from different cameras (it is enough to move your phone around for a few seconds) and recommends the best ones. Samsung also prides itself on the Galaxy S20 Ultra’s 100x zoom, which combines optical and digital zoom.

New items differ in weight (163, 186, 220 g), battery capacity (4000, 4500, 5000 mAh), display diagonal (6.2, 6.7, 6.9 inches). They have a common matrix – AMOLED with a resolution of 1440×3200, a refresh rate of 120 Hz and support for HDR10 +. The fingerprint scanner is embedded in the screen.

Now about the cameras. The S20 and S20 + have the following configuration on the back: 64MP (telephoto), 12MP (wide-angle), 12MP (ultra-wide). The S20 + is also equipped with a depth sensor. The front camera for both models is a 10-megapixel one. The S20 Ultra has a 40MP selfie camera. It can work in 10 megapixel mode, collecting 4 pixels in 1 for improved clarity. On the back of the superflagman, there are 108MP, 48MP (telephoto), 12MP (ultra-wide) lenses plus a depth sensor. The main sensor is trained to combine 9 pixels into 1, producing a 12-megapixel image. Although the unit sticks out strongly, its presence is fully justified: after all, we are dealing with a universal camera.

In general, the thickness of the S20 Ultra turned out to be decent – 8.8 mm. Not surprising given the 5,000mAh battery. It can be replenished with 45W charging. In the case of younger models, 25W charging is offered.

All flagships are equipped with the most powerful 7nm Exynos 990 chip (Snapdragon 865 in the US), operating at a maximum speed of 2.7 GHz. In addition, they are equipped with fast and up-to-date LPDDR5 RAM. The S20 and S20 + have 8 GB each, the S20 Ultra has 12 GB (such models will be brought to Russia). The storage size is the same – 128 GB. It can be easily expanded by 1 TB by purchasing a micro-SD card. It is inserted into the slot for one of the two nano-SIM. Agree, nice numbers for a gamer (don’t forget about 120 Hz at the screen).

The hardware of the new Samsungs guarantees excellent performance in any game. However, gamers will be interested in smartphones not only by the top-end “filling” and the Game Booster application, which cleans the RAM from background programs, but also by the games themselves. So, at the presentation, Samsung announced a partnership with Microsoft. In the spring, the Forza Street arcade from Electric Square will “drop in” at the Galaxy Store . True, it has long been distributed to PCs under Windows 10 under the free-to-play model.

What else? The operating system is Android 10 with One UI 2. The main connector is USB Type-C, there is no 3.5 mm jack. The degree of protection against dust and moisture is IP68, that is, smartphones are not afraid of immersion in water. They will calmly survive a downpour, but we do not recommend diving in the pool and the sea: do not forget about chlorine and salt.

Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro

Xiaomi has shown the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro during an online broadcast as China has been quarantined due to the coronavirus outbreak. Both phones are capable of competing with the Galaxy S20 family, but there are not so many differences between the standard and Pro versions as we would like.

The “motor” of Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro is Snapdragon 865. At the presentation, the Chinese boasted that Mi 10 scored a record 585 thousand points in the AnTuTu benchmark. Xiaomi phones are equipped with a 6.67-inch AMOLED matrix with a resolution of 1080×2340. The refresh rate is lower than the Galaxy S20 at 90Hz. Nevertheless, you will hardly notice this in games: the picture will be as smooth, fortunately, the hardware allows. By the way, players will also appreciate the fast UFS 3.0 memory (write up to 730 MB / s) and support for Wi-Fi 6 (transfer up to 9.6 Gb / s).

The peak brightness of the Mi 10 is 1120 cd / m² (when displaying HDR10 + materials), the Mi 10 Pro is 1200 cd / m². For the automatic adjustment of the display brightness, 2 light sensors are blown out.

What’s new in appearance? Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro received 2 stereo speakers, rounded edges, a smaller bottom indent. A fingerprint scanner is also built into the screen. The 20-megapixel front camera huddles on the top left (diameter – 4.08 mm). It records 1080p video at 120 fps.

Each model has three configurations depending on the amount of RAM (LPDDR5) and flash memory (UFS 3.0):

  • 8 and 128, 8 and 256, 12 and 256 GB;
  • 8 and 256, 12 and 256, 12 and 512 GB.

At first glance, there is a catch with the battery. Mi 10 is equipped with a 4780 mAh battery, Mi 10 Pro – 4500 mAh. The Chinese compensated for the lag of the Pro version with high-speed charging: while the Mi 10 Pro takes 45 minutes (50 W) to fully restore the charge, the Mi 10 takes 65 minutes (30 W). Both phones can be powered by a 10-watt wireless charger.

And the main thing is the rear cameras:

  • Mi 10: 108 MP, 13 MP (ultra wide-angle lens), 2 MP (for macro photography), 2 MP (background blur);
  • Mi 10 Pro: 108MP (with 50x digital zoom), 20MP (ultra wide angle), 12MP (telephoto), 8MP (telephoto).

DxOMark rated the main photo sensor of the Mi 10 Pro at 124 points. This is the best result in the history of the site. Mi 10 Pro is ahead of the previous “king of camera phones”, Huawei Mate 30 Pro.

New Xiaomi products run Android 10 with MIUI 11. Smartphones support the Game Turbo 3.0 option, which optimizes performance and reduces power consumption. The cooling system includes a huge evaporation chamber, layers of copper foil and graphite.

In China, Mi 10 went on sale today (prices in rubles – from 36,400 to 42,800 thousand). Mi 10 Pro will hit the shelves on February 18 ( 45,500 – 54,600 rubles). In order to save money, it is better to take the usual Mi 10: the lag behind the Mi 10 Pro is scanty, but it is far from the concept of “cheap Xiaomi”. Xiaomi will arrange a presentation in Europe later, and there the situation with the cost will become more specific. As to the Galaxy S20, the release of all three models is scheduled for March 13 – the Russians, they would cost $ 69 990 , 79 990 and 99 990rub. It is still incorrect to compare the flagships Xiaomi and Samsung head-on – it remains to wait for independent tests. And, of course, it is interesting how other leading smartphone manufacturers will respond to these announcements – how their top-end novelties will look like.
