If you’re one of those who’s been really disappointed that Dragon’s Dogma 2 only has four classes available at launch, we have good news. As you progress through the game, you can unlock so-called advanced callings that offer a wide range of unique skills and techniques, adding more variety to the game’s combat system. One of the most interesting hybrid classes is definitely the Mystic Spearman, who’s equally adept at furious melee attacks and spectacular magic tricks. And the best part is that you can learn this extraordinary calling pretty quickly if you know what to do.
How to unlock the Mystic Spearman vocation
As already mentioned, at the start of the game you have only four standard classes available: Fighter, Archer , Mage and Thief . However, in Dragon’s Dogma 2 you can always change your choice by going through a special procedure in the vocation guild.
We wrote about this in more detail in our other guide .
However, unlike the starting vocations, the so-called advanced ones must be opened in advance, and this will require a lot of time and effort. Here, the developers decided to play out the process of learning new skills literally. You need to find a master of a special fighting style and prove that you are worthy of becoming his student. In our case, we are talking about a virtuoso of the mystical spear named Sigurd. Like many other NPCs in the game, he is not tied to one point and is free to travel the world, doing his own thing, so you can meet him in three different places.
Please note that unlike other callings that can be taught to Pawns, the Mystic Spearman can only be taught to your main character.
How to find Sigurd in Melve village
The fastest way to meet him is in the village of Melve, which will only happen after the story quest “The Throne of the Lord”, which involves meeting Captain of the Guard Brant in the Wernworth Tavern.
During the conversation, he will offer you a choice of three story quests: “Cleansing Up the Monsters”, “Disa’s Intrigues”, and “The Imprisoned Lawman”. You need to complete at least one of them, and it is better to choose the last two, since you can complete them right in Vernworth. Then turn inquestBrant and head to the village of Melve in the north, which is most easily reached by cart from West Wernworth Station.
Upon arrival, the first thing you will witness is a terrifying scene – how the villagers, among whom will be that very Siugrd, are fighting a dragon .
Since there is a chance that Sigurd will not survive this battle, it is best to take a Wakestone Shard with you in advance, which is made from three shards. They can be obtained in different ways, so to make it easier, use this interactive map and run through the nearest markers called Wakestone Shard.
If you can’t find Sigurd’s corpse on the battlefield, head to the Funeral Home in Wernworth, where you can bring almost any prematurely dead NPC back to life.
Of course, you need to help Sigurd and the locals kill or drive away the monster, which is easiest to do by destroying the boils on its body, but we recommend choosing a more complex tactic, which will ultimately bring more benefits.
Run immediately to the north of the village to the high tower and climb the stairs to the very top, where a huge ballista is installed. You need to hit the dragon 2-3 times. If it takes off and is about to run away, you need to aim a little higher.
After killing the monster, you will automatically be transported to it and will be able to pick up the Deadringer glaive from its corpse, which can only be wielded by Mystic Spearmen, by the way, about that.
There you will also be able to talk to a dark-skinned man in a hood named Sigurd, who did some miracles with his double-sided spear during the battle with the dragon. Ask him about his unusual fighting technique, which will unlock the Mystical Spearman vocation.
And if you managed to effectively defeat the monster with well-aimed shots from the ballista, then you will earn the respect of the master and you will receive as a reward a scroll with a special skill for this class, “Wild Wrath”.
As we already mentioned, you can only change your class in the vocation guild, so we once again recommend that you read our guide on this topic.
How to find Sigurd in Harv village
If you still didn’t manage to cross paths with Sigurd in Melva, he can be found in another village during the “Purge of Monsters” quest from Captain Brant, which we talked about earlier.
The quest will take you to the village of Harv, southwest of Vernworth. There you will need to complete another quest called “Scaly Invaders” and after a couple of days, Sigurd will appear in the Coastal Hut on the outskirts.
In this case, it is enough to simply talk to him about the fighting style, and the calling will unlock automatically after you exhaust all dialogue options.
How to find Sigurd in Dragon’s Breath Tower
The last chance to learn Sigurd’s skills will be in the Dragon’s Breath Tower, which is located in the southwest of the desert kingdom of Battal, where you will get to a little later in the story.
The Master will be standing at the stairs at the entrance to the tower and will ask for help in the battle with the next dragon, if you were previously unable to defeat the monster in Melva.
This time there will be no alternative way to kill with a ballista, so you can only hit the dragon’s weakest spot – the red pulsating boils. For defeating this enemy, you will also receive a scroll with the skill “Wild Wrath”.
As we mentioned at the beginning of the article, the main advantage of the Mystic Spearman is his ability to combine attacks with cold weapons and magic , which allows him to deal with enemies as effectively and efficiently as possible, regardless of their type and size.
The signature weapon of this class is a long, double-sided spear or glaive. Although its size already allows it to keep opponents at a distance, a skill such as Double Slash, which transforms into an improved version of Twisted Slash with frequent use, increases the area of effect even more. And a special attack, Magic Slash, allows you to not get close to your opponents at all, throwing energy projectiles at them, imbued with the power of the elements.
Yes, while it’s great fun to slash at everyone with the double blades of a glaive in close combat, the Mystic Spearman truly shines when using ranged magical attacks.
For example, the spell “Scattered Lightning”, just like stunning and prohibiting discharges, allows you to stun and even paralyze opponents for a certain time. Add here “Fast Step”, which gives your hero the ability to teleport to the attacker after using his lightning attacks.
This is coupled with special weapon skills such as Dragon Tooth and Dragon Fang, which allow you to move quickly across the battlefield, gaining the ability to catch up with fast and agile opponents, thereby becoming virtually elusive.
And the ability “Wild Wrath” allows you to dash towards targets, including flying enemies, together with your illusory copy, dealing double damage.
But the most important and pleasant thing is that the Mystic Spearman can not only beautifully deal with crowds of enemies alone , but also act as an irreplaceable team player thanks to useful defense and support skills. Most often, you will use the Mirror Armor spell, which creates a temporary protective barrier around the player and allies. And this is only a small part of all the possibilities of this unique class.
