The hours-long journey through the world of Thedas in Dragon Age: The Veilguard will eventually come to a logical conclusion. However, throughout the game you will have to make several important decisions that will determine the content of the ending.
If you make the wrong choice, it can lead to the death of some characters, including Ruk(a)’s companions. To prevent this from happening, read the information we have collected below: here you will learn how to get the best ending, as well as trigger a secret ending in the form of an additional post-credits cutscene.
Basic Points for Getting Endings
- There is a point of no return in the game , which begins with the When Plans Align quest . After this key moment, you will lose access to any side quests or companion quests, and will be able to focus solely on the story missions.
- In the final sequence, some companions and representatives of different factions (Shadow Dragons , Grey Wardens, Antivan Ravens, Veil Walkers, Lords of Fortune, Sorrow Watch) may die . Therefore, it is extremely important to take into account several important factors that affect their survival .
- Before moving on to the finale, try to complete most, if not all, of the companions’ quests so that they reach the status of Veilguard Legends .
- Increase the power of the factions to the maximum level – three stars (that is, you need to accumulate 3000 points or more; although some factions will last with two stars).
- When choosing between Minrathous and Treviso, it’s best to choose Minrathous . Otherwise, you won’t be able to get the Shadow Dragons reputation to three stars. Then again, if I understand correctly, they can survive with two stars.
- When you have to choose companions to perform various tasks during the last missions, make decisions based on the skills of your companions . Otherwise, the incompetent character will die.
- In addition, there are several additional tasks that will allow you to achieve the most ideal result.
- You need to complete the quest “The Regrets of the Dread Wolf” as its completion will determine the fate of Solas (the Dread Wolf ).
- Be sure to complete the quest “Source of Corruption” to obtain the Essence of Mythal, which will make it much easier to defeat the final boss .
- You can also find three mysterious circles that trigger an additional post-credits scene.
- Despite all of Solas’s sins, you can atone for his guilt and help the elf .
How to make Legends companions into Veil Guardians?
As mentioned above, all companions can receive the Veilguard Legend status. This happens after completing all personal companion quests. At the same time, the Veilguard Legend status and relationship level are not connected with romances and love branches. You can completely ignore them. Although side quests are the most important condition for entering the love line.
A Veilguard Legend companion is much more effective at the task you assign them at the end of the game. However, this does not always guarantee their survival, as an incompetent Veilguard Legend companion will still die.
How to pump up the power of factions to the maximum?
To get the maximum faction power (three stars or 3000 points), you should complete all the quests for that faction in the region it belongs to. In rare cases, completing quests in another region can yield additional points for two or even three factions. If you are missing a few points to reach the final goal, find a faction merchant and sell him valuable goods. Remember that each faction merchant has a list of preferred goods: correctly sold items will allow you to get up to 15 points, while unnecessary ones will give about three.
Here are some examples:
- Grey Wardens love all sorts of Darkspawn related junk and anything griffon related.
- Veilwalkers are fond of items related to elves and nagas.
- Sorrow’s Watch merchants favor strange , occult items, like the Book of the Dead.
Additionally, at some point you will have to complete one of two quests, “On Wings of Corruption” or “On Wings of Death.” Which quest is activated depends on the decision you make when you return to the Lighthouse at the end of the mission “A Guardian’s Best Friend.” You will have to choose between saving Minrathous or Treviso. I can say for sure that saving Minrathous will allow you to get the best ending of the game, but I am almost equally sure that the same will happen if you fulfill the other requirements but save Treviso.
However, the following factors influence the choice in favor of Minrathous:
- The Shadow Dragons faction has settled in Minrathous, and the Antivan Crows have settled in Treviso. The faction that loses your help will also lose its main merchant. You will have no one to sell valuable goods to, and you will not be able to increase the power of this faction.
- Helping Minrathous will cause the Antivan Crows to lose 100 Strength, while choosing Treviso will cost the Shadow Dragons 250 points.
- Since you won’t be able to sell valuable goods to the Shadow Dragons if you choose Treviso, it will be extremely difficult (if not impossible) to raise your faction reputation to 3000 points.
- Alternatively, you can do everything to pump up your reputation with the Shadow Dragons faction to the maximum before starting and completing the quest “A Guardian’s Best Friend”. To do this, spend all the accumulated money on buying valuable goods from regular merchants in the same Treviso or Minrathous.
Who should lead the diversion team – Harding or Davrin?
Once the When Plans Align story mission begins, you’ll reach the Island of the Gods quest. This is the first part of the final line. And right at the beginning, you’ll have to make an important choice and decide which companion will lead the distraction team – Harding or Davrin?
Whoever you choose here is guaranteed to die during the boss fight with Gillannáin. Nothing can save this character, even if he is a Veilguard Legend or your favorite. This is the only guaranteed sacrifice you will have to make in the endgame.
Who should disable the barriers – Nev or Bellara?
Upon reaching Elgar’nan’s fortress , the team will encounter a barrier that must be destroyed. This can be done by Nev or Bellara.
The girl you choose will fall into Elgar’nan’s trap. But unlike the previous case, this character will not die, since you will be able to save him later. On the other hand, you will not be able to take this companion into the party until the very end of the game.
Battle against Gillannan
The fight with one of the two final bosses, Gillannan, is quite simple, as the elven goddess, although floating, is mostly in the center. The boss throws fire spheres, and, like all the other mobs, is focused exclusively on Ruk(e). The fight will start in a 1v1 format, and the first thing you need to do is destroy the corruption nodes to free your captive comrades. All this time, you will be pursued by dozens of Darkspawn, although by this point you should have no problem dodging them.
Once you free the fourth companion (Lukanis), a cutscene will begin. The companion who led the second team (Harding or Davrin) will die at the hands of Gillannan, but thanks to this, Lucanis will deal her a fatal blow.
Love scene with the chosen companion
At the end of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, you can see a love cutscene with a selected companion, provided that you have completed their personal quests and decided to have a romance at the end. The scene will unfold after defeating Gillannan and returning to the Lighthouse. As soon as you enter your room, your significant other will join you.
Note: If you romanced Nev, Bellara, Harding, or Davrin, the scene may not play out, as these characters may either die (Davrin or Harding) or disappear before the end (Nev or Bellara).
How to save all satellites?
Eventually, the Last Gambit chapter will begin, and it will be crucial to the ending of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. This is because all your allies from other factions join the battle, and together with them, you go to Elgar’nan’s lair. You also need to choose certain companions to help them.
Here are some interesting facts:
- Whether faction representatives survive depends on their Power. It is important to pump up the power of all factions to three stars, but in some cases two will be enough.
- You will receive hints about which companions are best suited to complete a particular task.
- If the faction power is low, the companions are not Veilguard Legends, and/or you have chosen incompetent people to carry out the task, you may face numerous losses.
Choose a companion to support the Veil Walkers
- Companions with experience in working with magical spells – Nev or Bellara.
- Companions with experience protecting allies in battle – Davrin or Taash.
Our recommendation : Taash or Nev.
Choose a companion to support the Antivan Ravens and Lords of Fortune
- Companions with experience in fighting mages – Nev or Emmrik.
- Companions with experience in surprise attacks – Loukanis.
Our recommendation : Loukanis.
Choose a companion to support the Grey Wardens and Sorrowwatch
- Companions with experience fighting huge enemies or structures: Harding or Taash.
Our recommendation : either of the two options.
Last Breath”
Eventually you’ll reach the estate, which your companions and faction allies have turned into a makeshift base. There are several notable events here:
- You can honor the memory of fallen characters in the first battle with the god.
- Isabella sells all faction merchants’ wares, including any items you were unable to purchase when you lost access to the merchant after the quest “On Wings of Corruption” or “On Wings of Death”. This is also the last time you can upgrade and/or enchant items.
- Your companions will offer different options regarding Solas’ fate: fight him for the lyrium dagger or use the fake one.
- If the Inquisitor still has feelings for Solas, she will offer another option.
- If you obtained Mythal’s Essence during the quest “The Regrets of the Dread Wolf”, the protagonist will point to it.
- Additionally, if you have completed all the quests at the Crossroads, including “Source of Corruption”, Morrigan will give you the Felassan Rune . It has the following properties: +75% to detonation damage (passive skill); haste, increased damage, resistance, deflection, fire weapons, immobility and invulnerability (bonuses when activated). This rune can only be used during the battle against Elgar’nan.
- If your favorite survived, you can talk to him. Rook and his partner confess their love to each other .
Battle against Elgar’nan
The end of Dragon Age: The Veilguard is closer than ever! Next, you will have to fight against Elgar’nan. This boss fight consists of three stages:
- Phase 1: Elgar’nan summons phantoms that shoot electric beams and also casts electric-type spells.
- Phase 2. This is more of a transitional phase. The screen will go dark and your companions won’t be able to help you. All this time, you will be attacked by Elgar’nan’s ghosts .
- Phase 3: Elgar’nan uses fire attacks this time. Although he will also use spells, the boss focuses on melee combos at the end of the battle.
Final conversation with Solas
Once you defeat Elgar’nan, it’s time to choose your ending for Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Here are the options:
- Fighting Solas can lead to two different results depending on which companions have Veilguard Legend status…
- If all your companions are Veilguard Legends, they will be able to reflect Solas’ spells. Rook will punch Solas in the face and attack with a lyrium dagger, and then trap him in the Veil.
- If your companions are not Veilguard Legends, as soon as they attempt to attack him, he will be petrified. Rook will then make a final, desperate attempt that will leave the protagonist and Solas trapped in the Veil together.
- Outwit Solas . As far as I can tell, the party will not end up fighting Solas (meaning you won’t get killed). Instead, Rook will give Solas a fake lyrium dagger that will stun him for a moment. This will allow Rook to trap Solas in the Veil.
- There is also a third secret option, which involves completing the quest “The Regrets of the Dread Wolf” and several other tasks. This is the so-called true ending, which will allow you to achieve Solas’ redemption. In a separate guide, we will analyze the true ending of the game, related to Solas’ redemption.
End credits, summary
After the cutscene, you’ll see a few final slides. These concern the fate of your companions and faction allies, with some differences depending on the decisions you made earlier. For example:
- Who did you choose for the position of Archon of Minrathous – Maevaris or Dorian?
- Where did you send the griffins – to the Veil Walkers or back to the Grey Wardens?
- Was Emmrik able to revive Mannfred or did he turn into a lich?
The stories of deceased characters will be darker and more depressing.
Post-credit scene
There is also an additional cutscene in the game that you can see right after the credits of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. You can only unlock it if you find all 3 mysterious circles. An ominous voice will tell you about the events that happened in Veilguard and in previous games in the series, warning that this is not the end. Perhaps it is about the mysterious faction of the Bailiffs. In a separate guide, we tell you in detail how to find all the mysterious circles.
