What is DisplayPort?
DisplayPort is a digital video and audio protocol designed to connect computer monitors, projectors, and other devices. DisplayPort was developed by VESA, an imaging industry standards organization, and is now widely used as a video and audio interface. It is a type of standard connector that can be connected to a variety of different devices, such as HDMI .
DisplayPort uses a packet-based transmission system to transmit data. This means that it divides the information it wants to send into small units called packets, just like it happens in networks. They are sent from the transmitter to the receiver in series, and each packet can be delivered independently. If a package is lost or damaged, it’s not a big deal; the others can be received without problems.
Technical characteristics of DisplayPort 2.1
DisplayPort 2.1 is backward compatible with and replaces DisplayPort 2.0 (DP 2.0) . VESA and its member companies have worked hard to ensure that DisplayPort 2.0 products can work properly with this new version.
Due to this prior effort, some previously approved DisplayPort 2.0 products , including Ultra-high Bit Rate (UHBR) devices, whether they are GPUs, docking station chips, scalar chips, PHY repeater chips such as re-timers, or DP40 cables /DP80 (including both passive and active, and using full-size DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, or USB Type-C connectors ) have already been certified to the more stringent DisplayPort 2.1 specification.
The main priority of this new standard is to achieve a smooth user experience , whether it is through a native DisplayPort cable, through DisplayPort Alt Mode (DisplayPort over USB Type-C connector), or tunneled through the link USB4. For this reason, DisplayPort 2.1 has strengthened its alignment with the USB Type-C specification as well as the USB4 PHY specification to facilitate a common PHY serving both DisplayPort and USB4.
A new bandwidth management feature has also been added to DisplayPort 2.1 to allow the tunnel to coexist with other I/O data traffic more efficiently over the USB4 link. This increased efficiency is coupled with mandatory support for the visually lossless Display Stream Compression (DSC) codec and VESA’s Panel Replay feature. Without visual artifacts, DSC bitstream support can reduce DisplayPort transport bandwidth by more than 67 percent, and VESA panel repeatability can reduce data packet transport bandwidth. DisplayPort tunnels by more than 99 percent.
technical specifications
DisplayPort 2.1 has also updated the DisplayPort cable specification to provide greater robustness and improvements to full-size and Mini DisplayPort cable configurations to improve connectivity and increase cable length (over two meters for DP40 cables). and more than one meter for DP80 cables) without degrading UHBR performance.
Regarding the speeds , we have:
- VESA-certified DP40 cables support up to UHBR10 (10 Gbps) link rate, with four lanes, providing a maximum throughput of 40 Gbps.
- VESA-certified DP80 cables support up to UHBR20 link rate (20 Gbps), with four lanes, providing a maximum throughput of 80 Gbps.
