After having made good use of Iudex Undyr in the Graveyard of Ash , it’s time to continue our adventure in Dark Souls III , but before heading to the next waypoint on our journey, it’s a good idea to stop for a moment at the Firelink Shrine or – if we haven’t done so before – to get some items, and specifically one that will allow us to access the next area. If you didn’t visit this area before going for Iudex Undir , now is the time. It’s an area where you won’t find any enemies, but you will find characters who can help you. They are all near the central bonfire.
Know your allies
There are several characters in the shrine. Most of them act as very useful merchants, so feel free to at least check out their inventory. The Fire Keeper is perhaps the most important character. She is used to level up by purchasing attribute points from her in exchange for souls. The higher your level, the more expensive the points will be.
The Shrine Handmaid is the main merchant. You can buy and sell items from her. She has a bit of everything: consumables, weapons, armor, and magic to start with, and even a Tower Key that allows you to access an adjoining tower. Continuing along the path you unlock will earn you the Fire Guardian Outfit. Later on, you will visit this tower with that key that you got for 20,000 souls from the Handmaid.
Blacksmith Andre is another very, very useful character. With him, you can upgrade or imbue weapons, repair worn-out equipment, and refine Estus Flasks, distributing their contents into health or mana flasks as you wish, or improving their use with shards. There are more characters like Hawkwood or Ludleth of Courland who are relevant to the story and it would be nice to talk to them, if only to unlock emotes.
Now that you have everything you need, all that’s left to do is use the sword you removed from Iudex Undir’s body to light the bonfire in the center of the shrine. Doing so will allow you to teleport to the Great Wall of Lothric, your next quest, and many other places in the future.
