Cuba was under Spanish rule for approximately 400 years, until in 1898 the Americans gained control of the territory. Then, a few years later, the United States allowed Cubans to become independent. But, a military base was established that remains today.

History of Cuba

Cuban territory was occupied by indigenous people until 1492, when Christopher Columbus arrived on the land. Then, for at least 400 years, the Spaniards dominated the country and started economic activities, through the cultivation of tobacco and sugarcane.

In the year 1898, the United States conquered the territory of Spain and three years later, Cuba was granted its independence. Despite this, the country still has a military base, which is located in the city of Guantánamo .

In 1933, ex-sergeant Fulgencio Batista installed a coup with the United States. However, those dissatisfied with the situation conquered the country’s capital, Havana , through what is known as the Cuban Revolution . The movement’s leader was Fidel Castro, who later became president.

During the Cold War , Fidel Castro aligned Cuba with the Soviet economic bloc. With the intention of ending Cuba’s socialist government, the United States severed diplomatic and economic relations with the country. Remembering that Cuba is the only socialist country in America.

In order to manage the crises caused by the disconnect, the country needed Soviet support. Until in 1991 the Soviet Union came to an end, causing it to establish an economic crisis in Cuba. The American economic blockade continues today and in this way, the dollars have been maintained by tourist activities.
