Coronavirus: How to properly disinfect the home

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic keeps us waiting to see how everything evolves. What happened today due to the Coronavirus creates uncertainty for millions of families, but before thinking in the long term, it is better to think in the short term, and this means thinking inside the home. It is important to know how to properly disinfect the home to prevent careless infections.

This virus can survive up to six days on some surfaces and even nine days if the humidity conditions are suitable for its survival and there are low temperatures so that it can last longer hooking to the surface of some place waiting to find a host to infect it. This means that in addition to following the usual precautions, it is necessary to know how to disinfect the home. We have to be well protected.

Disinfect the house

Your house has to be clean and well disinfected, especially if some of the parents go out to work a few hours a day. You have to start cleaning from the farthest area of the house to the door of it. It is also important to air your home well, keep the windows open for at least 10 minutes every morning.

Follow these steps to disinfect all parts of the house and avoid contagion:

    • Disinfect the areas that you touch the most such as doors, cabinets, switches, etc.
    • Use the products you normally use to clean, but in this case it is important that you keep the cloths and rags clean continuously. If you don’t want to risk the virus being trapped in the cloth, you can use those that are disposable.
    • The bathroom and kitchen have to be cleaner than usual, think that they are delicate areas.

Disinfect everyday objects

In addition to having the parts of the house well cleaned, it is necessary that the objects that you use regularly are also well disinfected every day. This is so because there are everyday objects such as clothing, which can have high amounts of infectious agents.

We must be strict in personal hygiene, but also take into account that the surfaces with which we usually come into contact are also totally clean.

To consider:

  • Never shake it before putting it in the washing machine because the virus could spread. Ideally, wash your clothes up to 60 degrees and allow them to dry in the sun or allow them to dry completely before taking them back.
  • Electronics devices. Appliances have to be turned off and unplugged before cleaning. The best way to clean them is to use a cloth dampened with a solution of water and neutral soap, although if the surface allows it, you can use a disinfectant gel and spray it on the screen.
  • Children’s objects. Children touch things a lot and some of them put them in their mouths. Even the youngest children have their pacifiers, teethers, and other objects nearby that need to be disinfected more than usual with hot, soapy water.
  • If you use the car regularly to leave the house, it is important to sterilize the upholstery, filters and air conditioning ducts as much as possible. This will have to be done by a professional in the sector. To clean the rest of the car interior you can use a damp cloth with mild soap and a hand vacuum cleaner.

Remember also that everyday objects such as house and car keys, glasses … you should also disinfect them with hot water and soap and let them dry before using them again.
