Characteristic

In the adult state, it has a hump-shaped protuberance on top of the head, with enlarged scales, which manifests itself from 900 mm in size.

habitat

It regularly inhabits the rocky concavities of the coves or pools formed by the waterfalls. Mainly in the regions of the Nipe Massif , Sagua , Baracoa and the Guaso Basin .

Feeding

They are herbivorous and limnophagous, so they do not establish competition in food, in their community.

biological threats

It is sensitive to pollution produced by agriculture and urban regions. Commercial net fishing for other introduced species removes large numbers of adult specimens, just as exotic predatory species remove large numbers of juveniles and eggs, competing for food and reproductive space.

Natural enemies, reptiles and birds, also eliminate a considerable number of individuals. All of the above has caused these populations to decline in recent years.

Other factors continue to affect, such as the damming of rivers that changes the dynamics of the ecosystem. This endemic species is of great zoogeographical importance for the study of the origin and dispersion of cichlids in the area, for which reason it requires protection.
