Definition
Permanent intolerance to gluten , a complex of protein substances contained in some cereals such as oats (which actually contains avenins, corresponding to the gliadins of wheat but relatively safe for celiacs), wheat , spelled, kamut, barley, rye, spelled and triticale.
There are no typical symptoms of celiac disease ; the gastrointestinal symptoms, in fact, are similar to those associated with other pathological conditions, such as irritable bowel syndrome , gastric ulcers or Crohn’s disease , and sometimes these are even absent. If you experience the symptoms listed above, contact your doctor; a preliminary blood test , even if it has no diagnostic significance, is able to exclude the presence of celiac disease; if this is diagnosed with a small intestinal biopsy, the gluten -free diet is the most effective therapy for symptom reduction.
