Casa Marinkovic (Chile)

Marinkovic House . Representative property of the period of the nitrate boom, located in the historic center of Iquique . It was declared a National Monument of Chile in 1994 .

Location

Located at Calle Orella No. 751-759, Iquique, Tarapacá region , Chile.

History

The residence was built in 1905 and its original owner was Eugenio Mathieu. The Marinkovic family, originally from Croatia , purchased the house in 1945 . The Marinkovics were nitrate entrepreneurs, owners of the San Enrique office; when activity declined, the Marinkovic family sold the house and moved to Santiago . The new owner was Sergio Maldonado Buendía, who was Director General of Customs as well as being the director of the newspaper El Tarapacá and the General Chamber of Commerce.

Architecture

The house is built of Oregon pine , a material traditionally used in Iquique architecture , which was imported from California . With a continuous facade, the living room, dining room, kitchen and patio are located on the first floor; the second floor houses the bedrooms and bathrooms.

National Monument

The property was declared a National Monument of Chile, in the category of Historical Monument, through Decree No. 505 on October 25 , 1994 .
