Location

Located at Calle Mackenna Nº 1011, Osorno , Los Lagos Region , Chile .

History

Enrique Schüller, an engineer by profession , designed and built the house in 1923 for residential use. His home also acquires a symbolic value as it was the last house built in the sector that maintained the stylistic principles of German emigration , whose first representatives in the city date from the mid- 19th century .

In 1934 the house is acquired by Manuel Narbona and his wife Sofía Hott, the latter also of German descent. The couple lived in the residence until 1963 , later the property housed several commercial premises.

In October 2004 , the house was donated by Mrs. Hott to the German Institute of Osorno, on the occasion of the institution’s 150th anniversary celebration, which would transform it into the Sofía Hott Cultural Center.

In 2005 , the award of a FONDART project allowed the restoration of the general structure, the façade and the interior spaces, in order to ensure its functioning as a cultural space.

Architecture

The chalet-type building built of wood in 1923 maintains the influence of some heritage buildings developed by the German settlers at the beginning of the 20th century.

In the neoclassical style building with elements of a variant of the baroque , its wide and elegant entrance door stands out , framed by a triangular pediment, whitewashed finial and pilasters. In addition, as part of the porch of the house, three arches and four columns that make up the most recognizable sector of the facade are inscribed.

It has a delicate garden that works both as a reception space and as an isolation space from the neighboring buildings.

National Monument

On December 12, 1983, it was declared a national monument in the category of Historical Monument through Decree No. 1630 of the Ministry of Education .

Present

The House of Enrique Schüller works today as the Sofía Hott Schwalm Cultural Center, it is administered by the Deutsche Schule Osorno and is currently one of the most important cultural spaces in the city.
