Geography is the science of studying the earth and its characteristics. Science aims to understand space and place. Geographers seek and answer questions about why the place is different and why certain objects are where they were found. The discipline is divided into two types: physical geography which focuses on the nature of the earth and human geography which attempts to explain how man uses and manages space.

5 Job opportunities in geography

A geographer is a person who studies geography – in particular the terrestrial environment and human society. The goal is to ascertain the relationship between the two. Physical geographers study the natural environment of the earth and its characteristics while human geographers study how humans occupy the earth.

Cartography is the study and the art of making maps. Cartographers demonstrate the fact that spatial information can be understood from a modeled reality. The cartographers have the task of identifying the theme and agenda of a map. They come with traits to be present on the map and eliminate any complexity that may exist.

The oldest known map of mankind is thought to date back to the 9th century Babylonia era. Naturally, from that moment, the cartography has evolved and at the moment more accurate maps can be produced. Technology has played an important role in the production of maps as cartographers employ the use of aerial photography and satellite images to achieve finer physical details. For commercial purposes, maps are nowadays produced using specialized software.

An ecologist studies how organisms interact with the environment in which they live. An ecologist, therefore, focuses on the distribution, on the diversity and on the population of a particular organism, as well as on their mutual relationship and with the environment. The ecologist tries to explain how ecological functions are influenced by biodiversity. It is because of this fact that we think that ecology is a hustle and bustle of the three disciplines: geography, biology and earth sciences.

Land Surveyor

Land surveying refers to the observation, measurement and recording of the distance between places for the purpose of planning, determining boundaries or designing roads and physical structures. The professional who performs the measurement and design to determine the boundaries is called a surveyor. This is the geography career that is most practiced in a daily business and is popular among land developers and contractors who have built roads. It is also the field that has been overwhelmed by technology due to the need for accurate information. Land surveyors use 3D scanners, total stations, GPS receivers and digital levels to accurately execute and locate the boundaries between places.

A geologist is a scholar who studies the earth in its liquid and solid materials. Geology includes the study of the origin and movement of groundwater, the ages of rocks and their formation and classification of fossils. Geologists are often professionally employed in mining sites to look for precious materials like metals, oil or other earth resources. Like the vast majority of the items on this list, the professional scope of a geologist is wide.

Geography as a discipline has a wide range of careers to choose from. One who is willing to work in a career related to geography should be ready to do a lot of field research rather than work in the office. In addition to laboratory work, most of the geographer’s career is in the field of study. Geography, therefore, is a broad field that brings many opportunities.
