The only sustainable competitive advantage is learning and innovating faster than your competition. It is never the work of a single person, always of several talents in your company. Lack of talent in the Mexican labor market represents today the most important challenge for technology companies, as the profiles that companies demand are increasingly specialized, and very few candidates meet 100% of the profile. Not having adequate and well-trained talent in the company impacts the financial results of the company, whether due to delayed projects agreed with clients, low-quality deliverables, lack of follow-up, and other reasons.
How to attract the best talent in your company?
Although it is true that companies have to offer an attractive remuneration and benefits package to be competitive and attract the best talent, it is also a reality that the economic package is not enough. The most important point is to understand well the generational change since the expectations of the candidates changed. The emotional salary is no longer just a good complement to having motivated professionals, but a necessity to be competitive. The new generation of talents asks for flexibility of schedules, the possibility of working from home (home office) to avoid wasting hours in traffic and have a better quality of life. Some prefer to work part-time, outsourcing, or support a project as freelancers.
How to prepare for the future and avoid talent shortages?
Liaison work between companies and universities is essential to prepare students for the world of work. The discrepancy between what companies request and the knowledge of university graduates is important. We see for example that the majority of candidates do not speak another language, when more than 80% of technology companies need talents who are fluent in at least English and in some cases a third language. Most companies request talents for specific projects, which requires teaching several important soft skills such as teamwork (particularly when each executive works remotely, since even more coordination is needed in these cases), effective communication , and (among others) commitment to deliver the projects in a timely manner.
If it is very true that the educational system must evolve, companies must become more involved in the work of bonding, actively participating in the work tables to define the curricular model by competences, and inform, share experiences and expectations to students . The AMITI Human Capital Committee (www.amiti.org.mx) was founded to support the industry in facing these challenges, taking concrete initiatives. We invite technology companies to join the committee and participate in the events we are planning with various universities.
