How to recognize a broken engine mount

What is broken engine mount?

Let’s start with some brief definitions. By engine mount we mean a component of the car that is responsible for securely securing the engine to the car frame, avoiding excessive vibrations that are ordinarily created by the running engine.

In other words, without the presence of the engine support, we will run the risk that all the vibrations generated by the engine will be transferred to the bodywork and other components of the vehicle, generating an unpleasant driving experience!

This is why, precisely by virtue of the functions they are called upon to perform, the engine mounts are very important and resistant elements, made with a steel part and a rubber part, which can contain the risk of direct contact between two metal parts. , and in such a way as to reduce vibrations as much as possible. In some cases there may be a special liquid in the engine mount that can further improve the absorption of vibrations.

Because the engine mount can break

Like any component of your vehicle, the engine mount can also break , although it does not happen frequently.

It is also quite simple to try to understand why. The very strong vibrations to which this element of the vehicle is continuously subjected and, at the same time, exposure to atmospheric agents, represent some of the main causes that can determine the breakdown of the engine mount .

It should also be borne in mind that the engine mount is often made with a thick layer of rubber which, as such, and as it is continuously subject to the stress of vibrations, could dry out and crack, thus creating a heterogeneous surface on which the engine rests, which in turn it could contribute to accentuating the wear of the device.

How to recognize a broken engine mount

There are numerous useful symptoms to be able to recognize the broken engine mount .

The first “warning” element is certainly represented by misalignment: if the car engine is not aligned, but is tilted to one side, then its components will no longer work properly and will end up causing long-term damage. Therefore, the anomalous misalignment of the engine is one of the main symptoms of a broken engine mount.

A second symptom, perhaps even clearer than the first, is excessive engine vibration . In fact, even only one of the motor supports is worn out, to prevent the correct stabilization and alignment of the motor, which in turn will feed a particularly annoying vibration, because the motor could jolt more than it should, transferring the strong vibrations inside of the passenger compartment.

Another very clear symptom is then constituted by excessive noise . Whether it is a case of wear or a definitive breakdown, often little changes: an engine support that does not work correctly will end up creating very strong vibrations and noises that even the less experienced motorist will certainly not find it difficult to recognize. The noise could, for example, be due to the fact that the engine can hit other components, such as internal parts, which will end up generating constant friction.

Finally, another symptom is broken straps . In fact, if the engine is not supported by the engine mounts in an aligned and precise way, all its components will malfunction, including the service belts or the timing belts, which could be so damaged that they require immediate replacement.

Of course, in order to know more, we can only advise you to contact a trusted mechanic immediately, who will allow you to understand if the motor support is actually red, and replace the damaged component.
