Federated States
Germany is a federation of 16 Länders who each have their own constitution, parliament and government. There are 3 cities in Germany which are also Länders: Berlin, Bremen, and Hamburg.
What is the Federal State of Germany?
This is the type of country in which these regions have autonomy while respecting shared power at the federal level.
Each of the 16 states has the government and power status guaranteed by the federal constitution. However, these countries do not have power in terms of foreign policy or international rights.

German states have independent jurisdiction and full control over rules, city law, media, teaching, culture and worship. For those who have a different language, each state can adopt certain laws but may not conflict with federal law.
What is Stasi?
Until 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell , Germany was two countries: FRG and GDR.
The GDR is a totalitarian state managed by the Stasi (Ministerium für Staatssichercheit) which emerged around 1950 after the war ended and was inspired by the KGB method.
The aim of the Stasi was to guarantee Communist Party control over the German population. This has resulted in surveillance of all communities whether in schools, factories, businesses, or shops.
The goal is simple: know what everyone thinks and what they do to eliminate all disagreement. For Stasi, everyone is a potential suspect and it’s not uncommon for Stasi agents to check the post and press the telephone button.
Just like the NSA in the US or the Investigative Power Act in the UK in terms of e-mail and web search, Stasi infiltrated the private lives of Germans to gather as much information about anyone they considered a potential threat. The station consists of around 274,000 employees and 174,000 informants and accounts for 2.5% of the population.
The scandal expressed by Edward Snowden about the NSA has brought similar practices to the surface but on an international scale. The work carried out by spies in the Second World War is now carried out by computers and algorithms.

European Union Citizen Rights in Germany

Classical Naturalization
There are several conditions that must be met to become a German citizen:

I was born in Germany but my parents are not Germans. Can I get a German passport?
A child born in Germany must have at least 1 parent with a permanent residence permit. This applies to children born after January 1, 2000.
Can I become a naturalized German citizen without living there?
This is possible in theory but does require absolute mastery of the German language which might require time in Germany or other German-speaking countries. You must also be able to support yourself as stated in the previous section.

How can you lose German citizenship?
If you obtain new citizenship (from outside the European Union or Switzerland), you will automatically lose your German citizenship. You can only save it if you get permission from the German authorities before gaining new citizenship.
