History

In 1903 the first members of the Congregation of Missionaries Sons of Mary arrived in Antofagasta. In 1907 the congregation built a wooden temple, which was destroyed by a raging fire on December 7, 1912 , only saving some sacred objects and the carved image of the Heart of Mary. It was rebuilt and completed on December 8 , 1928 , the day of the Immaculate Conception .

The 1995 earthquake damaged the statue of the Virgin Mary on its top, so it was replaced in 2011 by a copper sculpture .

On May 10, 1999, Pope John Paul II granted the title of Minor Basilica to the temple of the Parish of the Immaculate Conception under the name of Church of the Heart of Mary.

[[During the protests in Chile in 2019 , on]] December 13, the temple was attacked by hooded men, destroying part of the furniture to make barricades.

Architecture

Its mixed style combines Byzantine and Gothic character , with a large octagonal slanted dome , crowned by a dome where the figure of the Virgin Mary is located at the top. It has a central nave and two side naves with ribbed vaults, which support a trefoil that also has a Cleristory. With rose windows and a circulatory in the ambulatory part, it also welcomes a choir and chapel in the back.

This work is 55 meters long and is accompanied by two 35-meter twin towers.
