When was World Health Day created?

World Health Day was created on April 7, 1948 , the same date that the World Health Organization (WHO) was created. However, its celebrations began in 1950.

Each year a different theme is chosen to be addressed in different events that mark the date. Some of the slogans of previous campaigns are: “Universal health: for everyone, everywhere”; “A thousand cities, a thousand lives”; “Saving lives – safe hospitals in emergency situations”; and “From the field to the table, obtaining safe food” .

World Health Day is important because it addresses health-related topics that affect the entire population.

Why is World Health Day important?

World Health Day addresses different topics related to population health every year. The date is important to make everyone aware of important points in maintaining their health, and it is also a time to sensitize government officials to create strategies that improve the health of the population.

What is health?

When we talk about health, we usually refer to the absence of disease. An individual without any disease, therefore, would be healthy. However, when we study more deeply what it is, we realize that its definition is much more complex than we imagine.

According to the World Health Organization, health is not just the absence of disease, but a situation of perfect physical, mental and social well-being. It is clear, therefore, that, according to this definition, health is a difficult state to be achieved, since it involves a series of socioeconomic, environmental and biological factors.

Everyone has the right to health.

It is worth highlighting the role of the State in maintaining the population’s health . According to Art.196 of our Federal Constitution:

“Health is the right of everyone and the duty of the State, guaranteed through social and economic policies aimed at reducing the risk of disease and other diseases and universal and equal access to actions and services for their promotion, protection and recovery.”

Therefore, it is the role of our government officials to guarantee the minimum conditions for its population to achieve physical, mental and social well-being.
