Analysis Stitchy in Tooki Trouble

As a good Nintendo console, Switch little by little brings together a truly incredible amount of platform games for all tastes. Rummaging through its catalog we find from triple A platforms, to much more niche and humble titles that also deserve recognition, a category to which this production from the independent studio Polygoat will end. We refer to Stitchy in Tooki Trouble , a game that surely very few users of the Nintendo console will know because, honestly, it has passed under the radar until practically its release, which has just been produced through the eShop store . A title that is currently exclusive to the hybrid console and that is entertaining within its manifest simplicity .

This simplicity extends to all the aspects that shape this work, starting with its argument, which is as simple as the norm used to be in this type of proposal. One good day the bad guy on duty, Tooki, rakes in all the corn he catches by hand. And that’s where our protagonist, Stitchy, comes in, a scarecrow who suddenly comes to life and is encouraged to recover said loot that, it seems, is his main purpose in that life. An inconsequential story and that, once the brief initial video scene is seen, does not have any kind of prominence throughout the game. An anecdote more than anything else.

Assuming the role of the scarecrow Stitchy, we must take down the army of wooden creatures led by Tooki.

Very simple and traditional platforms

The developers have proclaimed loud and clear the influences that have shaped some of the gameplay exhibited in this platforming adventure. And these titles are none other than Donkey Kong Country and Crash Bandicoot , two sagas as veteran as they are very loved by many of us and that, indeed, their influence is noticeable as soon as you spend a while in the world of Stitchy. The source of inspiration that is most evident in our opinion is that belonging to the work of Rare and Nintendo, given that although the title has a 3D visual finish, the gameplay is completely two-dimensional. In addition, it is possible to notice numerous nods to this saga, such as certain phases of wagons (an incunabula in the series starring Donkey Kong), a design of the world map that welcomes all levels that has a fairly similar arrangement, etc.

The phases of the famous wagons are one of our favorites. One of the many nods to the Donkey Kong Country saga that the title exhibits.

What about Crash Bandicoot ? Well, it also takes some elements, such as the theme of the wooden boxes that are distributed throughout all the scenarios and that we must break, although in this case their collection is not part of the collectible items as it happens in the series created. by Naughty Dog. However, once all this has been explained, we must make clear a couple of very important aspects that separate this production from both classics. And the most important is the simplicity that Stitchy Tooki Trouble reveals in all its elements, something that has nothing to do with the complexity (in the best sense) that both DKC and, even more so, Crash Bandicoot achieves .

Those looking for a significant level of challenge can already look elsewhere, because this platform adventure is very easy and relaxed.

This is clear if we pay attention to its control, which could not be simpler … and also limited. And it is that beyond executing a double jump and a culetazo, the protagonist is hardly capable of making any additional movement. A design decision that has its pros and cons. On the one hand, all of this makes it very accessible, a feature coupled with a very low level of difficulty . A combination that will surely attract less skilled and novice users in these struggles but that, in return, will put back those who are used to dealing with much more difficult platform titles such as, without going any further, the Crash Bandicoot themselves .

The final bosses await us at the end of each of the three worlds that are part of this adventure.

In short, it is a very quiet platform adventure that, if you are not one of those who seek too complicated challenges in this type of title, it is quite enjoyable while it lasts … which is not much either. And not because the developers have scratched with the amount of levels included, (there are nine in each of the three worlds plus an additional hidden one) to add a total of 30, but because their length is quite meager. In about three hours it is possible to overcome it with all the collectibles and the three extra levels as soon as we do well with titles of this nature. A game that in its technical aspect is not bad at all considering its indie origin, with relatively detailed and quite diverse scenarios within what is possible. And as for its sound finish, the melodies accompany the action well without disturbing it, while the sound effects are somewhat scarce but well performed.

Despite being a 2D gameplay platform title, the graphic section has been made in 3D and shows a quite plausible level.

Jumps for less experienced players

Without being the best platform game so far this season, this exclusive Switch title is perfectly enjoyable, especially for those less skilled or novice users … or, simply, for those who want to taste a good 2D platform game without worrying too much about calculating each jump to the millimeter . Precisely the latter, its low level of difficulty and its relatively short duration, become its two main drawbacks. But for the rest, this is an entertaining game, with a sufficient variety of situations and levels and several quite successful nods to franchises such as Donkey Kong Country and Crash Bandicoot. Something more originality in his approach would not have hurt him, but despite that it is a more than correct work within its genre.
