Among Us: check out tips to discover the group imposter

“ Among Us ”, the game developed by Innersloth for smartphones and PC, was originally released in June 2018, but it is only recently that its popularity has reached viral levels through social networks – and this is due to the amount of memes that reference the main game mechanics.

During a game, which can be played in online or local multiplayer mode, you are part of a group of people who must conduct routine tasks to keep a spaceship up and running. However, at least one of your group members is a traitor who will actively seek to kill you and your companions – either by murdering or sabotaging the ship until no one survives.

In addition to the common tasks, then, it will be your role to find this traitor and ensure his survival. With that in mind, Olhar Digital gathered some tips collected from online forums and game strategy sites to help you in your search for the enemy:

Who is closest to a body is probably the killer

This is a general tip and not by any means a permanent rule, but in most cases, if you find someone entering a room, only to then see a corpse, it is almost certain that the person you met is the killer. That’s because Among Us has the possibility of reporting incidents and, let’s face it, a person who sees a body and is not a traitor would immediately denounce the corpse. If the person you went through didn’t do it, then you better be careful.

Know the tasks even inside out

The routine tasks imposed by the departure work to keep the ship running. Therefore, impostors will actively try to sabotage the smooth running of machines, generally avoiding completing their own obligations. Therefore, knowing the time required to complete each mission, whether it has more than one step or a specific location to be conducted is extremely important.

Mark who and where you meet on the ship

In Among Us, the starting space is considerably large. Therefore, marking positions and rooms where you meet other players is interesting knowledge. In fact, this tip is related to the previous one: by knowing the tasks and the locations of their executions, you can get more information about why that person is taking longer than normal, even being close to the location indicated for the mission. And with that, you already have one or more suspects in mind …

Impostors hate groups (and will try to isolate you from them …)

As a rule, Among Us allows up to 10 people to connect to a match, each with their own assignment. The impostor (or impostors) will usually try to be alone with some other member, looking for an opportunity to eliminate him “on the sly”. A good idea to counter this is to stay in pairs or trios, performing your tasks normally. Thus, one always covers the other and, beyond that, anyone who enters, watches you and your companions to leave the place next, can be an imposter who realized the difficulty of killing someone there. But don’t always count on that, because…

Good impostors pretend to work

Wiser enemies tend to blend into the routine, so it is not uncommon for you to see an imposter in a room with more members, standing on a panel and pretending to be performing a task. As soon as you falter, he may go after you, or worse yet, someone with him may think you are the saboteur. A good way to counteract this is to look at task notifications: goals in green are completed obligations. If you know where and which panel performs a certain task – and this panel is busy but the relevant objective does not appear in the video, prepare yourself: you have found an enemy camouflaged among your friends.

The game benefits impostors, but also delivers them

All players in a match move at the same pace, without exception. So if you are following someone who is a little bit ahead of you just to disappear in the next corner, you have encountered an enemy. That’s because they are the only ones that can move through the ship’s ventilation ducts.

Another benefit: legitimate members have a limited vision and walk the corridors with some care. Not imposters. So if you see someone walking as if they know everything in their path, it’s probably because they know everything in their path. Keep in mind that this person may just be an unsuspecting gambler – or a murderer.

Impostors will use their suspicion against you

Among Us values observation and attention to detail: if you suspect someone close to you is an enemy, it is natural that your attention will be more focused on him and less on other things, such as routine tasks. A good impostor will realize that you are out of your league and can identify you as a threat.

Among Us players constantly find themselves playing a “cat-and-mouse” game against impostors, just so they can notice and add them. This was a ruse to deceive: when trying to chase them, players can be taken to isolated corners and ended up being eliminated.

At the end of the matches, if you can’t find anyone, you will have to vote for who you believe to be the opponent. Image: Innersloth / Disclosure

Impostor tactics can be used against them

The tasks in Among Us are specific, which basically means that you will not see anyone interacting with any panel. If a player enters a room full of other members, look around and leave, guess what: he was looking for targets. When you leave, you can very well follow him to a point where you know how to be more isolated (and, consequently, a preference for him) or even anticipate him, hiding somewhere and waiting to see his actions. Of course, this may involve killing someone, but once you are sure who the enemy is, the victory is already yours.

Impostors can be kind (but not without reason)

All the tips above are meant to give you a vague idea of the behavior of everyone in Among Us, but none gives 100% confirmation of your suspicions. Anyone – impostor or not – can, for example, report a found body or undo sabotage. Good impostors even do it frequently in order to create reliability in their actions.

Continued observance is undoubtedly the best strategy for you to succeed in the game: just because a member of the game has done something beneficial to the ship, it does not mean that he is free from suspicion. The only possible certainty in this game is that someone is up to it. So always keep your eyes open!
