All your companions differ in character, race, class, and factional origin. There are no gender restrictions that could block romantic branches – you can romance any companion regardless of the main character’s gender.

As written earlier, in Dragon Age Veilguard there are 7 minions of different races and factions:

• Harding thread
• Bellara
• Nev
• Loukanis
• Davrin
• Taash
• Emmrick

 

Does Relationship Rating Affect Romance?

As you progress through the storyline, making certain decisions will give you the opportunity to gain “Approval” from your companions. Once you have enough approval, you will increase your bond rank with a specific companion. As far as we can tell, this bond rank allows you to unlock new skills and abilities that you can use with your companions, and does not affect romantic lines. Players have managed to find love lines with several heroes with completely different bond ranks.

Thus, romance is more focused on flirting during dialogues – on choosing phrases marked with a “red heart”, as well as on completing personal companion quests. For convenience, these tasks have been moved to a separate section of the journal!

How to romance Harding?

• Race: Dwarf
• Class: Rogue
• Faction: Former Inquisitor

You might recognize Harding from Dragon Age Inquisition, where she was a scout. Although her role in the previous game in the series was small, Harding managed to make an impression on Dragon Age fans. In The Veilguard, she returns as a fearless archer, and will be your first full-fledged companion.

Even though you’ll encounter Harding and Nev earlier than the others, you won’t be able to romance them any faster than the other companions. It seems that any romance path only becomes available after you’ve assembled a full party in the Lighthouse, consisting of Rook, Varric, and 7 companions. So, even though Harding’s flirting opportunities will appear earlier, and you can start wooing her after the game’s prologue, you won’t be seeing any romantic scenes anytime soon.

In combat, Harding specializes in adrenaline-based abilities, which can increase the damage of allies, as well as the accuracy and damage of her bow. She likes it when Rook is willing to sacrifice himself for others, protect the innocent, and take the initiative.

• Gifts for Harding : Hinterland Oak (can be purchased from the Port City Black Market after completing the main quest “Bloodbath”).
• Personal quests : Unfamiliar Feeling, Stone of Expectation, Reborn Connection, Heart of the Titan.

Once you’ve traveled to Arlathan Forest, you’ll be able to begin Harding’s first personal quest , “An Unfamiliar Feeling.” Talk to Harding in the Lighthouse after completing “City of Shadows” and “The Singing Blade.”

As with other companions you find attractive, whenever you complete a story mission and return to the Lighthouse, open the map and check for markers indicating the possibility of communicating with Harding. If Harding is indicated by a speech bubble icon, be sure to visit her. Especially if it is a time-limited icon (with clock hands added to it). As always, choose the dialogue options marked with a red heart whenever possible.

You won’t be able to take Harding’s second quest until you complete the “Something’s Wrong” quest for the Grey Wardens in Lavendell. But once you’ve completed it, talk to Harding in the Lighthouse. The third personal quest, “Rekindled Connection,” will be received after starting the main quest, “The Cauldron,” from Davrin, and “Heart of the Titan” will be received after completing the mission, “Fire and Ice.”

There’s no need to worry about your approval rating, as it doesn’t affect your romantic relationships, but it does determine your available skills. You can romance Harding regardless of your relationship rank: continue to flirt whenever possible, and make your intentions clear when you can.

The first key moment for a successful romance with Harding is right after the quest “Bloodbath”, before the main quest “After the Storm”. Talk to Harding in the Lighthouse, and you will have the opportunity to flirt with the bandit. Ask how you can help. You will see a “heart” icon under her bond rank in the “Companions” menu, labeled “In Love”.

You can actually enter into a romance with Harding during the quest “Rekindled Connection.” Harding will say that something is stalking her, trying to lure her out, and Rook will have the following options:

• I won’t let you be taken away. Start an affair with Harding
• Don’t do what it wants! Rule out an affair with Harding
• I’ll go with you. Exclude affair with Harding
• It’s a trap. Rule out an affair with Harding.

After choosing the “I won’t let you be taken” option, you’ll see a cutscene with Harding, and she’ll now be listed as “Infatuated” in the Companions menu. Continue flirting with her, and you’ll see some additional romantic cutscenes.

How to romance Bellara?

• Race: Elf
• Class: Mage
• Faction: Veil Jumpers

Bellara is an elf and sorceress who works for the Veilwalker faction. She is obsessed with ancient elven technology and is one of the best in the field. She idolizes Emmrik and Nev for their talent in their respective fields. Bellara can be recruited early in the game, while exploring the Arlathan Forest in the main mission “In the Grip of Entropy”. She has several stunning ranged attacks that use electricity. Bellara is a virtuous person, but can get angry at any time when it comes to harming her fellow Veilwalkers.

• What to give Bellara : Elven Frog Figurine (can be purchased from the Veilwalker merchant in Arlathan Forest).
• Personal quests : “Echoes of the Past”, “Demon’s Deal”, “Cry of the Hummingbird”.

Bellara’s first quest, “Echoes of the Past,” can be obtained after completing the main missions in Port City and Treviso, which leads to Lucanis’s release. During this quest, she will reveal more about her family and the origins of the Veil Walkers. Her second personal quest, “Deal with a Demon,” will begin much later, after you have completed the main quest chain for the Siege of Weisshaupt (approximately 30 hours into the game). Visit the Lighthouse and speak with Bellara to begin the quest.

The quest “The Hummingbird’s Lament” will become available after speaking to Bellara in the Lighthouse after you’ve completed the mission “Uninvited Guests” in Arlathan Forest. As a reminder, the approval system in Dragon Age: The Veilguard does not affect romance. Thus, you can romance Bellara without strengthening the bond by simply choosing the following phrases with a “heart” icon.

One of the key moments related to the romance with Bellara will occur later in the game, after completing the main quest “Fire and Ice”. Talk to Bellara in the Lighthouse (you may need to visit the location multiple times if necessary). At some point, you should have the following dialogue options:

• I didn’t mean to deceive you. Exclude romance with Bellara
• It’s not true, and I like you. Show interest in Bellara (future romance with Bellara)

If you choose the second option, the “Shy Crush” text will appear under Bellara in the “Companions” menu. But this is not the end, and you can still flirt with other characters.

To finally romance Bellara, you need to activate her personal quest, “The Hummingbird’s Lament.” You can do this after completing “Uninvited Guests” in Arlathan Forest. After completing “The Hummingbird’s Lament,” meet Bellara in the Lighthouse and you will be able to choose the following options:

• It might not be the best idea to give up on a relationship with Bellara .
• I’m sure. Start a romance with Bellara

If you choose to romance Bellara, all relationships with other companions will become friendly. In the “Companions” section, Bellara will have the inscription “Sweet Romance”. Remember that you can only romance one companion per playthrough.

How to romance Nev?

• Race: Human
• Class: Mage
• Faction: Dragons of Darkness

Nev Gallus is a private detective well known to the people of Minrathous. A sorceress who uses frost magic and protects Port City. Nev is a charismatic character who has a soft spot for Bellara, who idolizes her. You will recruit her very early in the game, but you will not be able to romance her for a while. As with Harding and Bellara, the game will delay this until you have met all the companions. On the other hand, you will be able to flirt with the character before that point. Talk to her in the Lighthouse whenever an exclamation mark or speech bubble appears above Nev’s icon.

Nev enjoys considered options, choosing to seek out information and data rather than rushing into battle.

• What to give Nev? Collected evidence (can be bought from the Dark Dragon merchant in Port City).
• Personal quests : “Exploring the Port City”, “The Case of the Cobblestone”, “Chasing Clues”, “Clear Mind”.

The quest “Exploring the Port City” can be missed if you don’t complete it before meeting Davrin during the mission “A Guard’s Best Friend.” So complete the quest early, otherwise you’ll miss out on one of your opportunities to bond with Nev. Nev’s second personal quest will be available much later in the game, about 30 hours after completing the main mission “The Siege of Weisshaupt.” After that, talk to Nev at the Lighthouse to receive the quest “The Case of the Boulder.”

The “Chasing Clues” quest will become available after completing the main quest “Fire and Ice”. Talk to Nev in the Lighthouse again. After completing it and visiting the Lighthouse again, you will immediately receive the “Clear Mind” mission.

One of the major decisions regarding Nev must be made approximately 15 hours after Davrin joins the party (which happens after the mission “A Guardian’s Best Friend”). Immediately after this quest, Rook will have to choose between traveling to Minrathous or Treviso to help one of the two cities. If you choose Treviso instead of Minrathous, Nev will temporarily leave the Lighthouse, but will return once you recruit Emmrik and Taash.

This will not block the possibility of romancing Nev, but will make her “hardened”: it will be harder to increase the level of connection with her, she will stop healing you in combat. Instead, some of her abilities will deal more damage. Thus, if you want to make romancing Nev easier, it will be better to save Minrathous.

Another key moment will occur approximately 30 hours after completing the quests “The Siege of Weisshaupt” and “The Case of the Boulder”. If you decide to save Treviso, you will receive the following dialogue options:

• More difficult times ahead. Rule out romance with Nev
• I want to be close to you. Get closer to Nev for a romance, but the romance won’t start yet.
• I’ve got your back. Rule out romance with Nev

Once you reload the Lighthouse and talk to Nev again, you’ll see a cutscene and be able to start a romance with the girl (if you save Minrathous, the previous dialogue will be skipped and the next one will start immediately):

• I like to surprise you. Get closer to Nev for a romance, but the romance won’t start yet

Finally, the romance itself with Nev can begin during her personal quest “Clear Mind”. You will receive the following dialogue options:

• We are together. Exclude romance with Nev

• We will destroy Elia. Exclude romance with Nev
• I’m here. Despite everything. Start a romance with Nev

Once you enter a relationship with Niv, all other romantic connections will be blocked. A new signature will appear under Nev in the “Companions” section.

How to romance Lucanis?

• Race: Human
• Class: Rogue
• Faction: Antivan Crows

Lucanis is an Antivan Raven who represents a cult of professional assassins based in Treviso. He uses poisonous substances in combat. He appears mysterious and stoic at first, but he actually has a good sense of humor and mostly enjoys Rook’s sarcastic remarks.

Lucanis can be recruited during the Sea of ​​Blood story mission in Treviso. In combat, the man uses a number of necrotic-based abilities that weaken the defenses of enemies. Lucanis will take up residence in the pantry behind the Lighthouse dining room. Whenever possible, be sure to interact with the man.

• What will you give Lucanis? Antivan tea set (can be bought from the merchant Crouse in Treviso).
• Personal quests : “Coffee with Crows”, “Bloodbath”, “Inner Demons”, “Murder of Crows”.

Once recruited, you can begin Lucanis’ personal quest, “Coffee with Crows.” As with Nev, it’s important to complete this quest before completing the “Guard’s Best Friend” story mission and recruiting Davrin. Otherwise, you may miss this quest.

Bloodbath is technically a story quest, but it is part of Lucanis’ quest chain. He must be in the party during this quest. Bloodbath becomes available after The Siege of Weisshaupt. The last two personal quests, Inner Demons and A Murder of Crows, become available after completing the main mission Uninvited Guests in Arlathan. If you choose to save Minrathous, Inner Demons will be skipped and you will be taken straight to A Murder of Crows.

Approximately 15 hours into the game, you’ll be faced with your first major decision that affects your ability to romance Lucanis. After recruiting Davrin in the mission “A Guard’s Best Friend”, Rook will be asked to choose between traveling to Minrathous or Treviso to help the city. If you choose Minrathous instead of Treviso, Lucanis will temporarily leave the Lighthouse, but will return after recruiting Emmrik and Taash.

Other key moments to solidify your relationship with Lucanis will come after the story quests “Blood Dream” and “The Cauldron”. Visit the man in the Lighthouse to talk about the following topics:

• I don’t mind. Show romantic interest in Lucanis
• Sorry. Rule out romance with Lucanis
• Could be worse, right? Rule out the possibility of an affair with Lucanis
• Don’t be so damn proud. Rule out romance with Lucanis

If you choose “I don’t mind” and then “I like chaos”, you will still continue the flirtation and your relationship rank with Lucanis will change to “Risky Flirt”. To enter a romantic relationship with Lucanis, you must first complete the main quest “Uninvited Guests” in Arlathan and receive the mission “Inner Demons”. Be sure to re-enter the Lighthouse until you see the cutscene where Emmrik and Lucanis interact with the corpse.

After completing the quest “Inner Demons”, visit Lucanis in the kitchen, and you will be able to choose one of the following options (if you choose to save Minrathous, the quest “Inner Demons” will not start and this dialogue will not take place):

• You’re cute , you know. Start a romance with Lucanis
• You are too talented. Rule out the possibility of an affair with Lucanis

Once you decide to romance Lucanis, the caption under the man in the Companions menu will change to “Dance with the Demon” and you will no longer be able to romance other characters. Upon your return, Lucanis will be “hardened” and will require more points to increase your bond level with him. He will also lose his healing abilities, but his offensive abilities will be increased.

If you save Treviso, you will still have the option to romance Nev. On the other hand, after saving Minrathous, it will be nearly impossible to romance Lucanis. So, if you want to romance Lucanis, you will have to save Treviso.

How to romance Davrin?

• Faction: Grey Wardens

Davrin is an elf who enjoys it when Rook chooses “good” dialogue options (the thumbs up symbol). He spends most of his time in the company of his adorable griffin, Assan, caring for him as if he were his father. Davrin is the fifth companion you recruit in the game, as part of the story mission “The Guardian’s Best Friend”.

• What to give Davrin? Ancient Griffin Demonstration (can be purchased from the Grey Warden merchant in Lavendell).

The story quest “A Warden’s Best Friend” is obtained after completing the mission chain in Port City and Treviso. Once you have Davrin’s help, you can take on his personal quest “How to Train a Griffin”. During this quest, there are several romantic dialogue lines that will allow you to demonstrate your interest in the Grey Warden. To unlock the Grey Warden base in Lavendel and buy a gift for Davrin, first gather all seven companions and begin the mission “Something’s Wrong”.

Technically, “The Cauldron” is a story mission that also ties into Davrin’s backstory. He must be in the party during this mission. You can get the quest after the quests “The Siege of Weisshaupt” and “After the Storm”. The mission “Cries from the Past” will start while talking to Davrin after completing the main quest “Fire and Ice”. You may need to reload the area or do another companion quest before returning to Davrin at the Lighthouse. After completing this mission, talk to Davrin again and you will receive the quest “A Friend in Need”.

After completing the mission “The Cauldron”, also related to Davrin’s backstory, you will be able to make a choice:

Deciding to show interest in Davrin will not yet prevent you from having a romance with one of the other companions. His title under the bond rank in the “Companions” section will change to “Hot and bothered”. He is one of the last companions you will encounter in the game after completing the story missions “On Corrupted Wings” (or “On Deadly Wings”) and “Dragon Slayer”.

• What to give Taash? Priceless ancient trinkets (can be purchased from the merchant in the Hall of Valor).
• Personal quests : “Fire on the Sand”, “Dragon Class”, “Birth of a Baby Dragon”, “Secrets of the Qunari”, “Killing the Fangburner”

Taash is one of the last companions you can recruit in the game. Once you do, you can progress the romance tree quite quickly. Both of the first personal quests, Fire on the Sand and Dragon Class, can be obtained almost immediately after talking to Taash in the Lighthouse. Emmrik is a polite scholar and necromancer who used his gift of raising the dead to summon a charming servant named Manfred. He will make his home in the library of the Lighthouse, and will often interact with Manfred, who is usually seen carrying a tray of tea and happily muttering under his breath. Emmrik is also one of the last companions you will meet in the game after completing the quests “On Corrupted Wings” or “On Deadly Wings” and “Where the Dead Go”. Emmrik will typically cast spells in combat that deal necrotic damage to enemies.

The final quest in the Arrangements quest chain will become available after completing the main quest Fire and Ice. Complete each companion quest, continue flirting whenever possible to show your interest in Emmrik. Remember, your approval or connection level with a character does not affect whether or not you can pursue romance.

After completing the House of the Dead quest and receiving the Cauldron mission, talk to Emmrik in the Lighthouse (you may have to reload the area a few times). Approach him in the library and watch the cutscene. After that, you will have the following dialogue options to choose from:
