psychologists from the University of British Columbia (Canada), whose articlepublishedin the journal Annual Review of Psychology, decided to check whether all those numerous ways to become happier that appear in scientific articles and in the media really work.
After analyzing the results of scientific experiments that tested popular strategies, researchers concluded that many of them, such as “do random acts of kindness,” “eat right,” or “ meditate regularly ,” do not guarantee that you will become happier. However, they were able to identify techniques that do lift your mood and create a feeling of happiness.
Thanking someone (in person, through a letter, or a text message) can quickly lift their mood for the rest of their day.
2. COMMUNICATE MORE WITH STRANGERS
Light, casual chatting with strangers, when you are sociable, relaxed and confident, noticeably improves your mood.
3. ACT AS IF YOU ARE HAPPY
While our behavior usually reflects our inner state, it can work the other way too – so smile and have fun and you’ll feel much better mentally.
4. ADD NOVELTY TO ROUTINE ACTIVITIES
This will allow you to refresh your impressions and fall in love again with what brought you pleasure before, but has become boring.
5. TRY TO LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF THINGS
Positive thinking allows you to see the glass as half full, rather than half empty. This approach helps you feel happier, no matter what life’s challenges may be.
6. HELP OTHER PEOPLE FINANCIALLY
Giving money to people who really need it is guaranteed to improve your mood, especially if you have freedom of choice (when, to whom and how much you give) and you can directly see that your donation has brought benefit to the recipient
7. NEVER THINK ABOUT A BETTER FUTURE
Thinking that things could potentially be better than they are now prevents you from enjoying what you already have.
8. SPEND LESS TIME ON UNPLEASANT ACTIVITIES
Don’t like to wash the floor and vacuum? You are not alone. Try to do it quickly or, if possible, hire someone to clean for you. And you will be happy.
9. SPEND LESS TIME ON YOUR PHONE AND SOCIAL MEDIA
This also improves your mood. For example, try not to check your phone every minute during a trip to nature, or make a vow to go on social networks no more than once a day.
