For most people, furniture remains a serious purchase, so you need to approach the choice of new things with full responsibility. Consider the following seven nuances to avoid annoying mistakes.
Determine the required size down to the centimeter
Don’t trust your eyes and be sure to measure the room before buying. This advice may seem obvious, but it’s easy to forget, for example, when you’re choosing a new sofa for a spacious living room. Let’s say you’re sure it will fit in the room, but that doesn’t mean it will look good. If space allows, decide on the minimum and maximum size in advance. And ideally, it’s better to draw an exact diagram of the room and future furniture in the correct scale using special services or on paper.
Don’t buy online without looking
Nowadays, you can even buy a car or an apartment online. So, of course, many online resources offer furniture. In order not to buy a pig in a poke, be sure to visit the manufacturer’s showroom, and in a desperate situation, carefully study the reviews with photos or ask to send a video review of the product. Studio shooting allows the seller to show the product in the best possible light and not lie. Alas, reality can greatly disappoint you, and returning furniture is not an easy task. Be sure to study all the conditions and their legal weight – some stores sell furniture to order, in which case the purchase may be delivered much later than you could imagine.
Consider your lifestyle
It is important that the furniture is aesthetically pleasing and pleasing to the eye, but this is not its main function. Between two options that you like, give priority to the functional model. For example, a white sofa can look very impressive, but for a family with three small children and a dog it will become a real headache and will quickly lose its “marketable” appearance. The problem may be not only easily soiled upholstery – so, if you often have guests overnight, it would be wise to choose a model that allows for sleeping. A figured back in this case would be a mistake.
Pay attention to the shape
It is hardly a good decision to install a curved sofa against a flat wall. Or to buy a corner sofa with a smooth curve. Perhaps in the furniture showroom all this looked very nice, but you will definitely not say “thank you” to yourself for a “dead” corner with a collection of dust, which is problematic to reach.
Mentally play out all the usage scenarios
Remember that furniture is not meant to fill empty space. When planning a purchase, think about how you will use the space and what things you have no place to do in the house yet. Make a list of all possible scenarios to make the best decision when zoning. For example, if you need an additional workspace, it makes more sense to separate it from the main bedroom space. This way, someone can go to bed and someone else can work without disturbing each other.
Provide delivery options
Unfortunately, furniture cannot move through walls. And this fact leads to one of the most annoying mistakes. Even furniture that is ideal in all respects may be unsuitable due to delivery options. Calculate in advance whether the desired piece of furniture will be able to get into your home without having to break down walls – this is especially true for non-detachable pieces of furniture. You are unlikely to be ready to make such a sacrifice because the purchase categorically does not fit through the doorway (and sometimes even through the window).
Don’t forget about electricity
Surface-mounted sockets can ruin your plans. In this case, for example, the cabinet will not fit against the wall or you will have to ruin the furniture with a makeshift cut to “make friends” with the electrics. It is especially annoying to make such a mistake in an apartment with fresh repairs and new furniture. If you make changes to the wiring diagram too late, at least do not aggravate the situation with furniture and dangerous tees and extension cords.
