6 Signs of a Successful First Date

Eye contact, dilated pupils, and conversation on a variety of topics all indicate attraction during a first meeting. The science and technology video channel Function conducted an experiment and identified signals of interest between people on a first date. To do this, the researchers observed several couples getting to know each other (it didn’t last long – 7-12 minutes). The findings were based not only on observation, but also on information from special eye-tracking glasses that the daters wore.

1. Attention – on the face

On average, people looked at the face of their interlocutor 33% of the time. If they were not averse to continuing the acquaintance, they looked more – 36% of the time. If not, then less – 30%.

2. Enlarged pupils

People interested in a second date had pupils that dilated to an average of 5.53 mm during the conversation. The pupils of the others were smaller, at 5.27 mm.

3. Eye contact

It is no secret that eye-to-eye conversation is a sign of sympathy . The experiment confirmed this: the participant who did not feel the spark made eye contact with the interlocutor 7% of the time, while the others did so 11%.

4. Lots of topics for conversation

Couples who had a successful date managed to talk about nine different topics. The rest discussed about five.

The most popular topics were career, past experience, personality and travel.

5. Approaching

Participants interested in the conversation leaned toward their interlocutor more often. The rest tried to increase the distance.

6. Lots of laughter

People who wanted to continue their acquaintance laughed twice as much as those whose meeting did not go well. This is logical: a good first date should be fun and easy
