5 Pause Functions in Reading News Text

For a journalist or reporter, besides having to master a variety of news writing techniques such as investigative news writing techniques or straight news news writing techniques also must master the techniques of reading news well . Reading news is not as easy as reading a book because even if the news is written but the language used is the language of speech.

Why do you use speech or oral language instead of written language? This is because the news created is intended to be heard by the public. In addition, there are some rules that must be considered by journalists or reporters when reading news that is related to the tone, tempo, pause, and intonation.

These elements are very important in speech or spoken language because they can liven up the atmosphere and be clear. One element of the spoken language that will be reviewed this time is pause. According to Juhara et al (2005), pauses are temporary pauses in sentences to clarify meaning. Meanwhile, according to Irman et al (2008: 9), pauses are interpreted as stopping or silence. It was further explained that in spoken language, pauses were marked by silence.

And in written language, pauses are marked with spaces or are represented by slashes [/], commas [,], semicolons [;], colons [:], dashes [-], or dashes [-] . Generally, pauses in text or news texts read on radio or television are written using single or double slash symbols.

This is intended to make it easier for journalists or reporters to follow word for word in the text or news text and help them put pressure on certain words at the right time. From the brief review above, it is implied that pauses have certain functions. The pause function in reading the news text is as follows.

  1. Regulate breath while reading

The main function of the pause in reading the news text is to regulate the breath while reading the news text. This is very important because generally the news text that is read consists of long sentences. (Also read: Intonation Function in News )

  1. Determine the delivery of the message

The function of the pause in reading the second news text is to determine the delivery of the message. This is usually applied to long sentences. Example:

The police will patrol Whatsapp’s short message application / as a law enforcement effort // However / a new patrol will be carried out / if there are already suspects // The reason is // the high number of Whatsapp users in Indonesia / as well as the limited number of personnel and technology / owned by the police for monitor all //

The message to be conveyed the above paragraph is ‘the police will patrol Whatsapp if there are suspects as a form of law enforcement efforts’. (Also read: Articulation Function in News )

  1. Make it easy for listeners to understand the contents of the headline

The function of the next pause is to make it easier for listeners to understand the contents of the headline. Placement of the right pause allows the listener to easily understand the main contents of the sentence delivered. Example:

The police will patrol Whatsapp’s short message application / as a law enforcement effort // However / new patrol will be carried out / if there are already suspects // The reason is / the high number of Whatsapp users in Indonesia / as well as the limited number of personnel and technology / owned by the police for monitor all //

The headline from the example above is ‘the new police will patrol Whatsapp if there is really a suspect.’ (Also read: Time Caption Function in News Text )

  1. Influences the understanding and meaning of sentences

In addition to determining the message delivery and making it easier for listeners to understand the contents of the news, another function of pause is to influence the understanding and meaning of the sentence. Example:

According to the doctor’s examination Setya Novanto was indeed ill.

The above sentence has a different meaning and meaning if the location of the different pauses. For example,

  • According to the examination / doctor Setya Novanto / indeed sick. (the one who was sick was a doctor named Setya Novanto)
  • According to the doctor’s examination / Setya Novanto / indeed ill. (the one who was sick was Setya Novanto and the one who checked was the doctor)
  • According to the doctor’s examination Setya / Novanto / indeed sick. (the sick person was Novanto and the examiner was a doctor named Setya)

  1. Indicates sentence constraints

In reading news texts, pauses also serve to indicate sentence boundaries. Sentence restrictions are marked with punctuation. In spoken language, punctuation used to replace punctuation in written language is a slash. Single slash for short pauses and double slash for long pauses. Example:

North Sumatra Police / continue to investigate the element of negligence / in the event of an explosion / at the souvenir sales center / on the Kruing / Medan / North Sumatra road // The explosion that occurred last Friday / damaged at least four shop houses / and killed two people // Causes of explosion confirmed to be from natural gas / and not a bomb / because no explosive residue was found / at the scene //

Thus a brief review of the pause function in reading news texts. Hopefully it can add to our insights and knowledge about the pause and its function in reading news.
