5 facts about Heavy Rain In Video Games

One of the main PlayStation exclusives has been available on PC for several days now. In honor of this, we recalled interesting and little-known details of the development of Heavy Rain.

On June 24th , Long Rain , a long time Sony exclusive, was made available for PC in the Epic Store. This event is an occasion to recall the most striking episodes and little-known facts from the history of its development.

Heavy Rain could go straight to PC

With Fahrenheit completed , David Cage’s studio began looking for a publisher for the next project. Among the promising partners was Microsoft – the company highly appreciated Fahrenheit and was ready to take over the next development of Quantic Dream. However, in the course of negotiations it became clear that the story will also include the abduction of a child. Microsoft was alarmed – a game with such a topic, in their opinion, could easily provoke a scandal in the mass media. The developers were asked to change the theme. David Cage tried to explain that the meaning of Heavy Rain is different, but failed. According to him, this episode most clearly demonstrated to him that he will not find a common language with Microsoft .

Then Cage turned to Sony – it helped to meet one of the managers who liked Fahrenheit. The developer immediately warned that he was going to show the kidnapping in the game. Sony also tensed, but Cage explained that he did not want to add shock content for the sake of shock content and tickle the nerves of players with dark pictures of reprisals. “Our game is not about blood, but about the love of a father for his son,” he assured then, and they believed him. So Heavy Rain became a PlayStation 3 exclusive. After the release of the novelty, most of the controversy was about whether to consider interactive cinema from Cage as games or not, and not at all about whether it is appropriate for developers to raise the topic of kidnapping in the game.

Cage did not make a game about one hero, hoping in this way to “defeat death”

Cage wrote the script for Heavy Rain for a year

In an interview, Cage said that the script for Heavy Rain took him a year. “I wrote it from morning to evening, without stopping. And I put a lot of my experiences, my thoughts into it. Basically, this is a game about how I became a father and about my fears related to fatherhood. ” But what is there – before writing the script for Heavy Rain, Cage himself almost lost his five-year-old son in a shopping center (the son, by the way, participated in recording Sean’s movements for Heavy Rain).

It took the team 170 days to shoot all the necessary scenes with the participation of the actors. By comparison, the script for the next game, Detroit: Become Human , took Cage over two years – and that’s when working six days a week.

A deliberately unnamed city

Events in Heavy Rain take place in a certain American city without a name. According to Cage, he basically wanted to do without being tied to a specific place – be it New York or Los Angeles. In his opinion, this not only made it possible to write a more universal story, but also increased the feeling of being lost. However, the city did have a real prototype: Cage, a big fan of Shyamalan’s films, found out that The Sixth Sense and Invincible were filmed in Philadelphia. And Michael Moore ‘s Bowling for Columbine inspired him to see with his own eyes how the American poor live…. Cage tracked down a movie scout who had found locations for Shyamalan and asked him to show him around the poor parts of the city. The movie scout was surprised by the eccentricity of the Frenchman, but he complied with the request. “We saw a kind of poverty that no Europeans would expect to see in the United States,” Cage recalled.

Insomnia Madison

All the main characters in Heavy Rain have some kind of flaw. Madison has insomnia, Ethan has guilt, Scott Shelby has asthma, and Norman Jaden is addicted to tryptocaine

A lot of Madison scenes were cut from the final game. For example, at first the developers wanted to show how she arranges the rearrangement in the apartment and goes to the editorial office, where she looks for additional information in the archive and writes articles. Later, the developers still explained why the heroine suffers from insomnia – in a downloadable episode for Heavy Rain , which was released in 2010. Quantic Dream promised that it would make such downloadable episodes about other characters, but then announced that it was suspending work on them indefinitely – they say, it is more important to add PlayStation Move support to Heavy Rain. So far, no DLC has been released.
